Have you ever considered migration?

I would imagine that those numbers are rather large, but don't count on the local press reporting the figures anytime soon, for obvious reasons.

There weren't too many Singaporean students at the grad school I attended. Of the ten or so who graduated the same year as I, only two returned to Singapore (one of whom was on some kind of government scholarship, and had to return to serve out his bond obligation); the rest, including yours truly, found jobs here.

Rhonda SG

MG!!! Very Happy Good to see ya! How are you? Wink

Well, two out of 10 ... and the two had to return because of obligations to fulfill, who knows what they'll do after their bonds are up?! Twisted Evil

That's scary... majority of those who plan on migrating are brainy, well-qualified folks. Razz

And yes, the local press would never report on this, just like they skirt a lot of other issues. Razz

I heard staggering figures from my friend, who has connections, but of course, I can't announce it in here in case they kick my door down the very next second! Laughing

I think most people would like to retire earlier. It's crazy to keep on slogging for so long! And then, what's your whole life about? Preparing for work, and then work, work, work? Razz Bleak, isn't it? Neutral

WE know about nurses and their calling to service..Did you pursue it because it was a career or a calling like Florence Nightingale? Or because it was just to hop on to a rice bowl for survive? It's the same everywhere whether in here or Australia..maybe it just to make your day count for yourself..you are not born to live forever here on earth, we all will migrate too..It's 40 per cent for taxes in Ozzie land Lor! Very Happy

I will like to migrate to this place:

Doing okay thus far. You must be pretty excited about your impending departure--how are preparations for that coming along?

Reporting the figures for Singaporeans emigrating overseas would probably work against the government's efforts at attaining a 'Swiss standard of living'. After all, nobody is supposed to leave a place that promotes itself as a Utopia-in-the-making, right? Mr. Green

My dear norey,

If you're trying to be condescending, I won't appreciate it! Rolling Eyes Razz

But of course I know about the high level of taxes over in Australia. Did you think I'd plan such a big move without considering things on all fronts first? Laughing

I never professed to be a Florence Nightingale, and I would never be like her. Whether I pursued nursing as a calling, or because it's an 'iron rice bowl', well, what's that to you anyways? Razz And yes, I am NOT a workaholic, I do not envy workaholics, and I shall never be a workaholic! Twisted Evil I want to play as much as I work. Mr. Green

And, nope... it's not 'the same' everywhere. Every place has its unique beauty as well as its own set of problems. I've decided to pursue another brand of beauty and ugliness, so there!

Rhonda every is not the same as it is so subjective a matter and U wrote :

Wah, was away the whole morning and this very interesting topic came up! Surprised

I must confess, I've been thinking about packing up and moving elsewhere for a simpler life in a less crowded and less stressful environment. As the years go by I find that this place just drives me nuts, mainly the overcrowded conditions.

And really, I think I'd like being a fruitpicker. Mr. Green

av98m SG

Psssst. Rhonda, did you know that Florence Nightingale had a very high libido? Mr. Green Twisted Evil

Laughing

Haha that is what I told SO

You support me and I'll relax and enjoy nature as a fruitpicker Surprised

I got a knock on my head for saying that Sad

av98m SG

If you're willing to give up some luxuries and lead a simple life a fruitpicker's salary might be sufficient! Mr. Green

Info about Florence Nightingale:

In 1851 she rejected the marriage proposal of politician and poet Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, against her mother's wishes. Convinced that marriage would interfere with her ability to follow her calling to nursing, Nightingale continued to reject his proposal.

When in Rome in 1847, recovering from a mental breakdown precipitated by a continuing crisis of her relationship with Milnes, Nightingale met Sidney Herbert, a brilliant politician who had been Secretary at War (1845 1846), a position he would hold again (1852 1854) during the Crimean War. Herbert was already married but he and Nightingale were immediately attracted to each other and they became life-long close friends. Herbert was instrumental in facilitating Nightingale's pioneering work in Crimea and in the field of nursing, and Nightingale became a key advisor to Herbert in his political career.

Neutral Did she really forgo her chasity for an older man? Is libido is a new kind of sex drive unfilment perverted into alcoholics and workolics ? Just wondering??? Question

Errm... you get all these when working in Australia, too Laughing
Though may not be at a hotdog stall I might add. Mr. Green

SydneyLibrarian SG

Isn't this funny... we were gathering with some friends tonight & talking about the exact same topic! Wink Hubby & I migrated to Sydney quite recently; what attracted us to move here included:

- Got relatives in Australia
- Close enough to Singapore so can travel to & fro quite easily, compared to if we were to migrate to other countries (e.g. US, UK)
- We like the more relaxed lifestyle here, and also being able to knock off from work on time is a BIG plus; we have enough time to enjoy our private life, not like in Sg when working hours tend to 'eat' into one's private life.
- Being a permanent resident / citizen of Australia, we are more or less 'guaranteed' that we can use the medical system when we need to, and not pay a hefty sum like in Singapore hospitals; all we need is private health insurance which is relatively cheap
- Property is cheaper than in Singapore (some more, house and land are yours forever, not like for 99 or 999 yrs!)
- Same as the above, where cars are concerned Laughing
- People are generally more tolerant & friendly.

Negatives include:
- Cost of living is more expensive than in Singapore.
- We find it hard to be good friends with the Aussies (could be cultural barriers? Can mix well with them lah, but just cannot be goody-goody, buddy pals like we had in Sg)
- Miss our family & friends!

Errm can't think of any more reasons, if/when I do, I'll add them in! Mr. Green

FBI SG

yea man and my lecturer is an aussie! Laughing

FBI SG

Aussies is quite friendly wat, can see that frm my lecturer.

SydneyLibrarian SG

Friendly, yes, without a doubt, most of them can b friendly if they want to.
