Actually, in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, these shells are often picked up by locals for handicraft items! Man, all of us are lucky to be alive!!

Diving is something I'd love to do 'someday'. Years ago, I had a couple of dive-crazy colleagues but I didn't join them in their expeditions because it costs too damn much! Laughing And back then, I was earning so many times more than what I draw now. Razz

So, looks like diving shall have to be put on the backburner for a long time more.

they are expensive because of the toys that divers like to buy .... and because being in Singapore, we have to travel overseas to get clear waters and pristine reefs ....

however ..... I suspect Melbourne may be a bit different Rhonda ... Razz

i've seen enough documentaries to know what indigenous critters we have here that can do you much harm if you step on them...

and, like the ditz said, i think there are signs telling you to be careful coz there are such dangerous critters...

at least he wasn't as idiotic as an american marine who picked up TWO cone shells and posed for a picture with them near his neck.. he was dead before he hit the ground...

I've had friends stung/hurt by both while walking or wading in shallow waters. In one extreme case, the person hopped off a boat near the shore, and landed smack on top of a sea urchin, spikes and all, barefoot. Shocked
