I don't play the blame game.
I've seen both selfless and selfish people. You can't judge the
condition of an entire population (Singapore or elsewhere) just by
one incident.
As such, it's the luck of the draw who you approach first. This
girl was terribly unlucky to meet unhelpful people.
I really can't make any qualified statement of "people WILL help"
or "people WILL NOT help" . All I know is that I will give help if
it is required. And if I need help , the outcome will be dependent
on my crisis management skills , luck and the generosity of other
poeple.
If I were in the mother's shoes, depending on the child's condition
(not specified in article) and circumstances, I may decide to take
the taxi, because I've read that ambulances may take a long time to
respond. I believe it's possible that we reach a hospital more
quickly in a taxi than an ambulance can bring us there. This would
depend on the circumstance
My mom believes that when you have a child, get a car -
specifically for the use during emergency when you can't afford to
wait. But of course, not everyone can afford transportation.
But in the same attitude of helping yourself/ hedging against
risks/ increasing your odds of weathering a crisis , first aid
knowledge is important, not just for yourself or family but also if
you're approached for help by strangers, you can provide better
assistance.
