erm yea, this usually happens to girls when it is near their period, during PMS ba...dats y girls tend to put on a bit of weight during PMS...

Water Retention happens when your body accummulates more fluids and the total fluid levels go above the norm.

For some ladies, PMS brings on a mild water retention. That's when your everyday clothes start to feel tight around the waist or torso, or your bra starts to feel reeeely tight, it feels like wearing a Boa Constrictor! Laughing

Other more serious medical conditions can also bring on water retention. In such cases, the water retention can be so extreme that the limbs (hands and legs) start to look swollen. And in very bad cases, when you use a thumb / finger to press on the limb and remove it quickly, you'll see an indentation left there for a while. Razz That's what we call 'pitting edema'. Oh, btw, 'edema' is the medical term we use for 'water retention'.

Patients with AOCRF (Acute-On-Chronic Renal Failure), ESRF (End-Stage Renal Failure), commonly suffer from bad edema. Patients who are very ill and have been bed-bound for quite some time also tend to exhibit edematous symptoms.

Usually I put on around 6 pounds…dats like 2-3 kgs ba…

i went for a foot reflexology session once..

and the "shifu" said i got water retention n told me to cut down on my fluid intake..

i was drinking 2 litres a day cos of the hot weather... n have since cut down to 1 litre a day (my usual intake is 500ml. dun tell nellie shhhh)

my weight went down 3 kg in 3 days...

I thot the thing that retains water is the amount of salt or minerals taken in, as excess water (e.g. your 2 litre) will just passed out?

i dunno leh.. i only noe if i take in more than 500 ml in a day, i'd be runnin to the toilet every 30 min...

Not that simple. Hormones play a part too, namely, the hormones secreted by our adrenal glands, located on our two kidneys. Wink

It's a pretty complex pathophysiology.

500mls isn't a lot of water.

It's good to train your bladder to hold more. By right, we should be passing a moderate to large amount of urine each time, and not make frequent trips just to pass a trickle each time. Razz

Yeah, I know...that's why I don't like to drink water.

Another thing I discover, is when I'm hungry for too long a time, my body seems to release a lot of water, even though I didn't drink extra water...presume it's the metabolic process at work...? After that happens, the weight becomes so much lighter.....but not for long though. Laughing
