What would you wear to a wedding that says FORMAL?

i wear jeans to weddings... and if they ask, i'd say no size

Exactly how formal IS formal?

Last few weddings I been to said Smart Casual and I was terribly under-dressed. And thing is, at other weddings that says Smart Casual , I often see casuals like t-shirt and jeans.

And now kenna this invite that says FORMAL in dress code.

Is an ankle length cheongsam with no embroidery (but super bright colour) err formal enough? Or will a knee length ethnic looking cotton black dress do?? (Err offset with some.. green shawl or wadever so not all BLACK)

Then I asked the groom how formal is formal and I got nothing to wear and he 'jokingly' said I could turn up in my wedding gown. SO what, is he hinting it is like a BALL gown event?!?!

the last time I turn up smart casual at a 5 star hotel wedding...
its a tough time trying to blend into the gowns and high society
and the groom didn't say anything about dress code

What time is the wedding? If it's a lunch thing, just a dress that's knee length will do.. maybe top it up with a smart looking cardigan, or shawl, or even jacket if you want.

For dinner, long length dress would be nice, top up with a shawl or jacket.

its held at nite... ugh.. i wish i had one of those sparkly shiny tops.. and u know.. u can 'sort' of get by without going over the top...

once i went to a friend's birthday party.. in t-shirt and shorts.. then i realised his birthday was the same as his dad.. and his dad is some BIG shot society businessmen and EVERYONE else was totally dressed up in sparkly dresses and suits..... it was baaad.. I was stuck at the sofa whole night refuse to get up in case anyone notice me...

it's a lot easier for you ladies .... A nice dress for women can be stretched across quite a few dress codes ... not so for the guys ... I wore dark khaki slacks and a suit jacket to my Uni's Honours Society Induction ceremony and realised i was still under-dressed ... even though it said smart casual in the invite ... Confused

Better to be overdressed than under.

Knee length cotton doesn't sound formal enough. Can't go wrong with a long cheong sum IMO. What's holding you back... uh, it's too plain? Add on some accessories, like ethnic dangly earrings and sexy strappy heels, an eye-catching purse or clutch and you're all set.

In Singapore text, just a shirt and tie is good enough.
For girl, any long dress.

Very simple one.

Unlike in HK. A little bit formal means suit and tie.

I will be attending a colleague's wedding. Dunno what to wear too. I have a dress, which I think it's too formal for a colleague's wedding but my office workwear is too casual. And it's so hard to find nice cardigans to match with office dress. I dun own a shawl nor how to shape a Shawl too.. sigh
From what i know, other girls will be wearing traditional costumes...

it's always good to invest in a couple of little black dress..... 1 long 1 short... can liao! hehehee.... the rest is just accessories....

shawl is good thing for dressing up ... it's quite common and now relatively cheap... and err... not much skill needed in "shaping" it... it's a shawl not a scarf... Wink
