Y'know, one of my buddies made this comment about me pretty recently. The group of us girls were out having a nice time, and then the topic went to men.
Then, one of them turned to me and said, "You're too boring, my dear! Be a little 'bad', then men will be more attracted to you! Don't you see? The worse you treat them, the more they'll come begging at your doorstep! Treat them nice, and they'll take you for granted!"

Like Bear said, in his job, there's something called 'profiling' where they fit people into categories based on things like their behaviour, speech, etc.

It's just that like-minded folks tend to hang out together, love the same kinds of fashion, etc. And there's also a bit of peer pressure involved too, the desire to look like they belonged to their chosen group, so that they get a sense of belonging and identity.
