Its a question of seeing things half full or half empty.

If one assumes the world are always at one's throat and constantly in a pathalogical state of self-defeating thoughts when there is no difference between heaven and hell. With such outlook, how can one expect to devote effort into on mate seeking, sex and procreation activities ?

It certainly will take self-courage and much expose to rule a land where hunter-gatherers and conquest decides one's fate and fortune.
