They wanted to remake him into the new VW!!! But...
"Volkswagen New Beetle : Even though a new version
of Bumblebee in the form of a VW New Beetle would be more than
fitting, Hasbro designer Aaron Archer allegedly confirmed backstage
at the Official Transformers Collectors' Convention 2003 that VW
had already repeatedly rejected any possibe involvement in "war
toys" due to the company's rather inglorious origins (according to
rumors, the exact wording of the reponse was "No - and please never
ask us again!"). Incidentally, concept sketches both of Bumblebee
and a possible remold, Cliffjumper, can be found under the dust
cover of the book The Transformers Binaltech & TF Collection
Complete Guide which was released in March 2005 (sketch of
Bumblebee, larger image, rear view, sketch of Cliffjumper, larger
image, rear view).
Nevertheless, according to a statement at the San Diego Comic-Con
2004, Hasbro are still hoping to obtain a license from Volkswagen
sooner or later. The same was once again confirmed by Hasbro at the
Official Transformers Collectors' Convention in July
2004."
