SINGAPORE -
Roads around the civic district and Central Business District will
be closed on Sunday (Feb 28) for the first "car-free Sunday".
The pilot
scheme by the Urban Redevelopment Authority aims to promote a
car-lite Singapore, and will be held on the last Sunday of each
month.
Various
events will be held in the car-free area, and the closed roads will
form a 4.7km-long cycling and walking route.
Connaught
Drive will be closed to cars for most of the day, from 5am to
7pm.
Roads around
the Padang and the Singapore Parliament will be closed from 5am to
12pm.
They include
Telegraph Street and part of St Andrew's Road and Parliament
Place.
Some lanes on
Stamford Road, Fullerton Road, Raffles Quay, Shenton Way, Maxwell
Road, Robinson Road and Collyer Quay will be affected.

In addition,
four roads will be closed from 7am to 9am. They are McCallum
Street, Boon Tat Street, Cross Street and Finlayson Green.
During the
closures, access to closed roads will only be granted to police and
emergency vehicles.
Auxiliary
police officers will be deployed to regulate traffic and assist
motorists, police said.
Parking
restrictions will be strictly enforced, and vehicles parked
indiscriminately or causing obstruction will be towed.
Members of
public may contact organiser Hivelocity Events on 9778-1235
