the Bear SG reading 3 books now... one almost finished.. took me many years to finish coz it was lost for a while Cold Chisel - The Pure Stuff about the legendary australian band Cold Chisel and their comeback... their ups and downs and the band dynamics... strictly for fans of the band only The Fuck-up by Arthur Nerseisian it's a loser story which makes you thank God it didn't happen to you.. where a loser gets dumped by his girl, getting fired for asking for a raise to posing as a gay man to keep his job at a porno theater... quite funny and tragic in its almost surreal desperation Dr. Riemann's Zeros - Karl Sabbagh not very interesting and requires one to know pretty complex math to understand some of it.. which will make about 70% of people drop it like a hot potato will update when i start on new books
care bear SG you were reading The fuck up last year!!!! I recall.....cos I've been looking for that book because you mentioned it that time....I cant find it anywhere in any of the shops!!!
the Bear SG yah.. i lost it for a while.. my room's a mess.. which is why the Cold Chisel book, i've found after again after... 4 years so finishing it up got another pile of books to start up soon.. should finish these three soon
the Bear SG finally finished The Fuck-Up and the Cold Chisel book.. there is a happy ending to the former after his life went on a freefall and he became a bum on the street... and the Cold Chisel book? typical rock band thing.. not too bad tho' now, i am enchanted by Totto-chan, The Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi... i've just started it and already, it's brought a smile to my face also, started on A Brief History of Time... something which will probably take me forever to read coz i want to understand what Hawking is trying to say.. so far, so good

care bear SG Totto chan!!!!!!! shes so adorable!!! and the best way to learn anything is THAT way....school in a railway carriage yah?? or was it bus ?? railway if I recall.... If I ever have kids, I'm sending them to that kinda school!!
TehJarVu SG Originally posted by poon cho tang: mathematics: a very short introduction - A concise explanation of the differences between advanced mathematics and what we learn at school - Offers the reader an insight into such seemingly paradoxical concepts as infinity, the square root of minus one, and curved space - Tackles the sociological questions that arise regarding the mathematical community - e.g. 'Do mathematicians burn out at the age of 25?' - Clear and non-technical language throughout - The author received a Fields Medal for Mathematics in 1998, awarded for 'the most daring, profound and stimulating research done by young mathematicians' Description 'a marvellously lucid guide to the beauty and mystery of numbers' -Gilbert Adair This book aims to explain, in clear non-technical language, what it is that mathematicians do, and how that differs from and builds on the mathematics that most people are familiar with from school. It is the ideal introduction for anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of mathematics. Readership People who regret not learning more mathematics; people who are fascinated by popular science books, but are left wishing they understood them better; people contemplating doing a mathematics-related degree; people who would like to talk about mathematics in an informed way without having to learn technical details. Are you serious?
the Bear SG it's a disused railway carriage... and yes... they learn without losing that zest for life, for knowledge.. still at the beginning of the book.. where they just went out for a walk and the teacher gathered everyone around and showed them flowers, the parts and how butterflies "helped" the plants and also, i'm enchanted by the way totto-chan is full of enthusiasm for everything around her... that is rare today in our jaded world.. which is why i've got a smile on my face as i think about the little bit i've read so far
the Bear SG darn.. this book is zooming by too quickly... started to read it around 5:30pm and i'm already midway through it... but, it's hard to put down... but i will... going to start on The Code Book by Simon Singh about the science and secrecy from ancient egypt to quantum cryptography.. his other book, Fermat's Last Theorem was an excellent book! sheesh.. the things i do so as to stretch out the Totto-chan book

I cant do that... if I like it, must finish it.....will just keep on reading and reading it....if I dont, it'll be bugging me all the time!!!

the Bear SG used to be like that... when i was working office hours.. read a book, forgot to sleep.. by the time i finished it, i realise it's, like, 5am... zombie at work.. then boss figured me out by then.. "reading again?" she'd ask
care bear SG Just started reading EricDravens ' Why Men Dont Listen and Women Cant Read Maps" ....quite educational so far...if theres anything really interesting that I read, will post it here
the Bear SG i think ahpek is masochistic people already say i am for reading the Fermat's Last Theorem book but it's more like a storybook than anything with math thrown in
care bear SG I think so too ah pek n you too!! who would want to read a story book with math thrown in???!!!
the Bear SG aww.. c'mon.. give it a try one of these days it's really good.. all about how mathematical obsessions shaped the lives of a lot of people... if archimedes can be so engrossed in a math problem that he did not hear a centurion yell at him, and ended up being run through, it has to be good but there are stories.. like how, to pythagora's shame, he had a student drowned because the student (correctly) contradicted his teachings... and how Catherine the Great supported her "mathematical cyclops" Euler great stories in them
