In pictures: Yemen landslide

At least 43 people are dead and dozens are missing after a landslide destroyed a mountainside village in Yemen.

Large rocks tumbled down the mountain and swept away about 25 houses in the village of al-Dhafir.

Villagers and troops are digging through the rubble for survivors.

Some are clearing debris with their bare hands in the hope of finding family members alive.

Rescue efforts are being hampered by the terrain.

Medical personnel and aid workers are on hand to offer help. Eight people have been pulled out alive so far.

But officials warn the chances of finding survivors are fading as time passes.

Landslides are uncommon in Yemen, but the country is prone to floods in spring and summer.
