The fires started on Tuesday, with high winds driving flames across nearly 20,000 acres (8,000 ha) in the states of Texas and Oklahoma.

Worst hit was the Texan town of Cross Plains, where about 50 homes were destroyed.

Five people died in the fires, which were still smouldering on Wednesday.

Dozens of buildings were completely destroyed by the flames in the two states.

Some of the residents of a mobile home park in Arlington, Texas, lost all their possessions.

Residents of Mustang, Oklahoma, returned to their homes to pick through what remained.

Smoke from the fires reduced visibility in the area, forcing officials to close a stretch of an interstate highway.
