In pictures: Life after the tsunami

Just under half a million Sri Lankan people were displaced by the waves that hit the islands coastline on the morning of 26 December last year.

Nearly a year on many are still living in transitional camps.

Save the Children and PhotoVoice have been running photojournalism training workshops within the camps allowing the students to explore their own identity and give voice to their thoughts.

"Shes an old woman but she has no freedom.

"Sri Lankan women have to work into their old age. Its wrong: when we are children our parents look after us, when we grow up we should look after them in return."

"They cant walk very well so they cant go outside and they lose contact with the outside world."

"Ive only got a few friends, everyone else was killed in the tsunami.

"These friends I have now, we too will have to separate after "O" Levels, some to do jobs, some to go to higher education."

"We are happy because it is going up very fast. But sometimes I feel sad because other people still dont have houses.

"Italy gave the money for the building of our new house. We only have to wait three or four months more.

"I think a childs life is better than this life. Theres no progress for me financially and I dont have much hope of a job.

"Without a job I cant get married. Ive got more freedom now, because sometimes I dont sleep at my parents house. Its fun.

"But my parents have less freedom because they live with lots of relatives now and it isnt very peaceful."

"Sumana works as a domestic in Colombo. She lost her husband, her daughter and two sons in the tsunami."

Tsunami-hit schools

The old school in Baan Nam Khem is practically deserted now.

The pupils now have access to brand new facilities, which were bought using donations from abroad.

Down the road, a new school in Baan Bang Sak is still under construction, after the old one was destroyed by the tsunami.

Even though the building has not been completed, more than 600 children are already registered as pupils.

Most of them live in the school as well. This is one of the girls' dormitories.

Some have lost relatives, while others are there because their families cannot afford to look after them at home.

Headteacher Nora Phuwarat says many pupils are still grieving, often expressing their feelings through art.
