Technicians work on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as it is displayed to the press at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, July 20, 2005. NASA on Thursday postponed the launch of its next Mars probe due to a problem with sensors on the spacecraft's Lockheed Martin Atlas 5 rocket. The MRO science instruments and cameras will aim to provide the most detailed study of the Martian surface and the planet's atmosphere ever conducted by an orbiting Mars spacecraft. Drought in the UK

Dry spell

Parts of the UK are enduring drought conditions, with southern and south-east England particularly badly hit because of a dry winter.

It's the 10th-driest year in England since records began, with the least rainfall since 1996.

Inevitably, it's not a uniform picture, and northern Scotland is currently in its fourth-wettest period.

The South East

Southern and south-eastern England have suffered the most, with rivers and reservoirs well below normal levels and drought measures in place in parts of Kent and Sussex.

The nine months from last November are the sixth-driest, and the driest since 1975/6 - the record drought year.

Regional variations

There are marked contrasts in rainfall between different parts of the country - and even between successive months.

While northern England and Northern Ireland had particularly dry Junes, Scotland was very wet.

Yet the Scots had an exceptionally dry July while rainfall in parts of England was well above average.

Drought map

Despite a particularly wet fortnight in July, the South remains short of water.

Reservoirs are well below their expected levels at this time of the year, the legacy of an especially dry winter and below-average rainfall for much of the summer so far.

Impact

The Weir Wood reservoir, in East Grinstead, West Sussex, is at about 40% of capacity - half its seasonal average.

The impact can be seen in these photos taken 12 months apart by a BBC News website reader.

She says the nature reserve shown contains no more than a few puddles from recent rain and says the effect on bird life has been catastrophic.
