This black bear has been rescued from what is known as a 'bear bile farm' in Shenyang in north-eastern China. Thousands of bears are kept on such farms so that their bile can be extracted in an inhumane procedure from them to be made into traditional Chinese medicine. Research has shown that bear bile is completely replaceable by herbs and synthetic ingredients. -- AFP
