It first appeared on the McLaren MP4-17 (as far as my checks and memory serve me), and some mechanic remarked that it looked like 'a donkey's dick' (I'm serious!). Laughing

Might it serve an aerodynamic purpose, if the air which goes into the nose were channelled somewhere instead of building up?

I'm sure it works in tandem with the splitter in front of it, and has been designed not to corrupt the air flowing into the airbox from above.
