Alright, thread inspired by one of my more "active" students in my class today, who kept asking about how to pronounce certain words...

Alright, I am an English teacher, but I would have to ask, how to pronounce

I pronounce ' can't ' either way.... both ways seem to be acceptable.

Mispronunciations that really irk me are 'salmon' and 'sword'.... a lot of people don't seem to know that the 'l' is silent in the former, and the 'w' is silent in the latter.

yea, dats why my students asked, he is confused about how to differentiate can and can't, if can't is pronounced in a way that rhymes with pant...

Only americans pronounce can’t rhyming with can. The REAL way to pronounce it is k-ah-nt. So unless u wanna be an american don’t rhyme it with pant. What i found absolutely hilarious was that in my old primary school the entire school and all the teachers would mispronounce baton. They would say bay-ten and i would laugh my ass off.

I've been living in the US since '89, and I still run into that exact problem! Shocked

Differentiating between the two is made more difficult when the consonant in can't isn't adequately emphasized or difficult to hear (say, in a noisy environment).

Nowadays, if I am not sure if the speaker said can or can't, I'll follow up with, "Did you mean can or cannot?"
