Tis strange to clamp down so hard on the downloaders when the source of most unofficial fansubs are derived from capture of free-to-air broadcasts. It's a...

oh, that's not licensed. Laughing

Well, this is a company that seems to stand by its rotten products. And he is unabashedly unapologetic about his rotten quality.

I sense that this person is of the type to "smile while shooting his own foot". Laughing

After reading this link :

If what it stated is indeed true, why dun we fan of anime group together and pool a certain amount of $$$ (by donation) to some of those poor soul being issue the letter for them to fight out the case in court. If more then one of us are willing to fight it out in court, I believe the sheer amount of court case bills that odex have to fight will eventually bankrupt them. After all, without their 3k or 5k profit from each of their letter issue, they now have to pay for both the law suit and their so call anime crack down fees. Very Happy

If starhub are charging them for revealing 1000 IP detail. I am sure gathering evidences through searching 1000 household isnt really going to be easy nor cheap. The amount of fees and effort for count search warrant, etc will going to cost them a bomb.

But if they are going to juz sue a few of them, we will know at least where the law stand. After all the strength of many out weight the power of one.

Is there any lawyer here to clarify in this issue?

If 1 day no 1 dl anime and ppl in sg start losing interest in odex anime cos it’s crap and decide to import from neighbouring country like taiwan hong kong or rich 1 from usa or japan, will the odex go bust? i oso wondering the company they hire to check ip is permement or temp?

dumbdumb! SG

hmm but in year 2004, i think programs like klite can be used to get anime.

but hor, i think they not accurate, they said it dropped by 80%, so, where did their 100% income come from, if nobody even heard of them at that time.

but i was thinking about something. say things go our way, and odex sales crumble due to public displeasure etc etc.

what would you like to see? personally i'd be very gratified to have stephen sing make a public apology for his arrogance.

LazerLordz SG

Let's just say that I've personally been close enough to see a similar threat-of-a-lawsuit tactic used by an unnamed publication, which closed it's doors two months after making it's claim.

jay_rocks SG

i’ll hope for everyone stop and boycott their product.

jay_rocks SG

hmm, they have to pay isp for the identification of users… well, the ISPs tried to protect us but our ISPs collect money from Odex?

ndmmxiaomayi SG

Even if they didn't exaggerate, I would wonder how many people actually know about ODEX. When was company set up anyway?

CoolMyth SG

Seriously, I only heard about the ODEX name when they started posting that article in May. Laughing

ditzy SG

When I first saw their name, I thought it was a brand of condoms. Laughing

Odex suffer a set back from PacNet

http://www.zaobao.com/sp/esp.html

I hope the court will repect privacy of Individual be it online or offline. By granting the right of a commercial company to gaint exclusive personal informations will open doors to greater problem. I Wouldn't surprise if there is another you with same identity somewhere if Odex get away with it. Even criminal have their right.

The court should revoke it's earlier order. Instead, handling the matter to ISP to deal with those freeloader. After all, the ISP failed to stop them.

This not only teach those freeloader a valuable lession, it's also a rightful way to do.

CoolMyth SG

Only reserved judgement nia. Not like PacNet no need to reveal like that.

In the end, PacNet has to bow down and be paid for revealing customer info. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Bimborock SG

Yeh I know but is a great step toward comsumer interest. Not only works can be copy right you know. Our Identity too

jay_rocks SG

heard it was set up in 98, and started selling anime at 2000. but who the hell noes ?

I 1st knew about ODEX about 2 1/2 years ago when I bought their VCD Vandread. I tot it was nice until I realise that it was a mere english dub (I like anime for a long time, but I'm not very knowledgeable about it at the time). Then I proceed to buy their Fushigi Yuugi, which I completely regretted, $90+ down the drain for a badly made english dub and quality of VCD and its format (they tried to squeeze 3 epi in 1 VCD).

Finally, I proceed to buy GUNDAM SEED during the hype in Singapore. It was sorta good until I saw that it was released in 2002. It reached SIngapore 2 whole years later? WTF?

That was when I stopped buying from ODEX, about 6 mths ago, I took a look at their GUNDAM SEED DVD set, I tot, what the hell? The hype over already you still make new product? Then I took a closer look, $39.90 for 5 episodes. Only a mad man would buy this. That means, to get the full set of GUNDAM SEED DVD, they have to pay $390+. THat's over the top crazy.

That was my past experience from ODEX. The only good thing I bought from them was Ai Yori Aoshi. But that also, they didn't bother to separate the episodes, I have to scroll half the CD to watch the next episode.

ndmmxiaomayi SG

Although PacNet is a separate ISP, our whole network is monopolized by one company. It's only a matter of when. Watch this space carefully.

I can't believe the law actually allows them to sue people like that. Is this another example of the law protecting the interest of the rich/the influential, or doing only what is commercially beneficial?

In any case, they may be legally right, but they are certainly morally wrong to issue such warning letters and threatening legal actions for 'illegal' downloading.

I don't understand how can even things like animes (and musics, movies, etc) can be commercialised till this ridiculous stage. How can anything be an intellectual 'property'?

What's more ridiculous is that they made it seemed as if these 'illegal downloaders' have committed great crimes and sins against humanities when it's just...anime! Something that anyone can easily produce themselves.

This is such an insult to creation and certainly the arts, an infringment on the the rights of the public to appreciate these simple form of entertainment. I support the people who are taking legal actions against Odex. They're doing more harm to the society than these so call 'illegal downloaders'.

Fingolfin_Noldor SG

Lots of companies, in desperation, resort to moves like this.

I am willing to bet, that Odex is only resorting to such moves, because it is teetering towards bankruptcy.

I wonder if the company accountant is keeping track of costs. Laughing

CoolMyth SG

In the eyes of the law, there is no moral. The law is the law.

People really need to start understanding that first before finding out where we all stand.

There are no moral ethics in place, only the law.
