This anime started out good, but then turned to mush.

Which part? The beginning or the modern ending?

Ok, almost done watching Otogi Zoshi

I wouldn't say the anime turned to mush

I think so far, I prefer the anime when it was set in the Heian Era. The modern setting storyline is a little weird and I'm still trying to piece the puzzle together but it is still intriging enough to keep me going

The interesting thing is that the anime is based on actual historic figures though the storyline does deviate from the actual history itself and that you learn a bit of Japanese history and myths throughout the anime itself.
