SINGAPORE: The sleeper replacement programme on the North-South
Line (NSL) will be completed by the end of April, SMRT and the Land
Transport Authority announced in a joint news release on Saturday
(Apr 25).
The sleeper replacement programme has been part of a multi-year
effort to enhance the reliability of the North-South and East-West
Lines. With the completion of the programme on the NSL, speed
restrictions on trains will be lifted and train journey times are
expected to be shortened by 10 to 15 per cent.
For the East-West Line (EWL), sleeper replacement works will
commence from mid-May 2015. More than 92,000 timber sleepers
between Boon Lay and Tiong Bahru, as well as between Lavender and
Pasir Ris, will be replaced with concrete ones.
Works on the EWL are expected to be completed by end-2016. To
facilitate the works, SMRT will end train services earlier at
certain stations along the line.
