In the past surveys for CCL, when the results are published, the public can know the percentage of votes for a particular choice. But this time, the percentage of votes was not made known therefore we don't know whether the finalised names reflect the choices of the majority or not.

Sadly for you, majority of the people who voted didn't share your sentiments. And you are blatantly contradicting yourself within a self-contradictory sentence - "Tan Kah Kee has nothing to do with that area at all, only the school from what I know". Much as you cringe, you can't deny that the school is the most prominent landmark in that area. :) Ergo, him being the founder of the school, definitely made an impact on that area's landscape. And mind you, he isn't just a founder of Hwa Chong Institution - he is a philanthropist who should be lauded for his honorable deeds of donating large sums of money for overseas Chinese who, during that time, lack basic education. Besides, he did other charitable acts which I shall leave you to wikipedia or google yourself. Unless, of course, if your unhappiness stems from personal dislike or infantile jealousy of the school, then I've nothing to say. :D

Nah I have no problem with the school, it just that I strongly feel that a public station should reflect the surroundings and not some place that does not even have its name on the street directory. So what if he donate alot of money and it is honored, Benjamin Henry Sheares is our president, shouldn't that be even more honored? Promenade station was feedbacked by public to be called Sheares station as it is located near the bridge but it cannot be called cause it was located in Marina Promenade. Well between Marina Promenade and Benjamin Sheares Bridge, which is more prominent? I would say the bridge but since it is in Marina Promenade, it have to be rejected cause it reflects the area. Also sorry for me not checking but HCI is not just the prominent school there but so do NGH.

I just feel that LTA is stuck with naming stations especially in hugely private-estate areas, I wonder how are they going to name the Tuas Extension. Also I wonder did LTA really kept to its principles while deciding the names of these stations. For those who want more, Downtown & Petir Station are also terrible names to be honest.

And I am not alone to complain about the names.

Dear Students,

Following the announcement of the 12 stations along the alignment of
Downtown Line Stage 2 on 15 July 08, the Land Transport Authority
(LTA) has invited the public to contribute suggestions for the names
of the nine Downtown Line 2 (DTL2) stations. Three names were chosen
for each station for this public polling exercise.

The three names proposed for the station right in front of our
school are: Duchess, Watten and Kah Kee.

LTA has decided that no MRT station would be named after a school.
Although the station is built on our land, they are not prepared to
name it Hwa Chong Station. Hence we feel that the next best thing we
could do is to try to name it after our founder Mr Tan Kah Kee, who
bought this piece of land for our use about 90 years ago. All of you
have benefited from his vision and generosity, I hope you would
agree with me that we should honour him by naming the station "Kah
Kee Station".

LTA is currently seeking public opinion on the final proposed name
for the station, at http://talk2lta.lta.gov.sg (Click "Surveys").
The closing date for the public polling is 30 October 2008.

Pls invite your parents to participate in this voting exercise as
well.

I am not amazed that HCI will make all ways to vote for it. They seems to forget what is the meaning of a public station. Also they really should read up their history on their founder & "their piece of land". I find this naming of their station after their founder is really more like a permanent advertising for their school. No offence to HCI's students, staffs, ex-students & ex-staffs. But I just expressing my own thoughts.

Used to be called NUH station for the working name, after which it was renamed to Kent Ridge.

Looks like NP is gg to benefit from DTL 2 by getting an MRT station nearby at King Albert Park, after NYP (Yio Chu Kang) and SP (Dover) got theirs.

Also to add on TP with DTL 3 along Tampines West.

with the distance of the station and e need for bus connection, I believe end up many might still prefer direct bus depending on their travelling pattern

Personally, I find that your arguments are firmly established by impressionistic ideas and many of them, very subjective.

Firstly, you feel that Benjamin Shears should be more honored. Fine, no problem. But there is no way that you can measure the public sentiment statistically, if Benjamin Shears is more honored or Tan Kah Kee is more honored. Anyone can easily say Tan Kah Kee should be more honored. (Go and ask those older generations) Besides, you hardly knew about Tan Kah Kee, as you've admitted in the first place! How can you callously arrive at your thoughts that "So what if he donate alot of money and it is honored, Benjamin Henry Sheares is our president, shouldn't that be even more honored?" ?

Secondly, you said that the Shears Bridge is more prominent. Sorry, but I personally feel that the Marina Promanade as a whole is much more prominent. So that renders your 2nd argument very flimsy too. If you look at the radius of the Watten estate/ Duchess estate + HC, where the MRT is built, which is the most prominent "area" there? Duchess estate? Watten estate? Come on, are they as "prominent" as the plot of land where Hwa Chong sits in? (Of course, if you insist that Duchess and Watten are more well-known than Hwa Chong, I've nothing to say. -_- )

Could I also kindly direct you to check-up on the exact location of the MRT station lest you reveal your ignorance inadvertently again. Let's not talk about the school, but the plot of land the station is built on. Where is it? A plot of land holding HC or NYGH? It is HC. So please do not digress to mention other schools, because the MRT is located just outside HC campus, and it so happens that the immediate plot of land which the MRT is built on is very "prominent", hence the naming.

Of course if you didn't graduate from Hwa Chong, I wouldn't blame you if you see this as an act of permanent advertising, but unfairly preaching that "they really should read up their history on their founder & "their piece of land", when you yourself hadn't done so in the first place, really stinks of hypocrisy. Besides, what makes you think they hadn't done their reading up?

And you might not know that the Hwa Chong Institution Clock Tower is Singapore's reserved heritage, additionally, no one is opposing the use of the land. It's not a matter of whose land it belongs to but the philosophy and history beneath that plot of land which concludes the name of the Downtown station.
