Construction of the East-West and North-South line was no easy task. The tunneling work is an challenging task, cause before the tunnel can be built. The road have to be diverted to allow the construction of the tunnel and a very deep trench was excavated. The construction method for the tunnel was cut and cover.

Now, by using a TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) it help to simplify the task.

The most difficult were Raffles Place - City Hall that cross under the Singapore River and Raffles Place - Marina Bay that cross under the bay (later that part of the bay was reclaimed).

NEL between Hougang and Punggol used the cut-and-cover method.

It's a literal translation from action to words...Dig the tunnel...after that cover up the top part so that the roads can resume to where it was before...and yes thanks for this thread...history lesson on MRT!

I remembered that when the branch line to Choa Chu Kang opened, the colour code was not green and blue but brown and orange instead.

From Jurong East to Choa Chu Kang: Orange

From Choa Chu Kang to Jurong East: Brown

Now, orange is used again, for the Circle Line.

I remember that too. I guess this booklet was printed before the change went into effect.

Anyway, here are 2 more pictures of the fares and travel times when the MRT first started running.

just to add on, the Choa Chu Kang Line (B1-B3) had only 3 trains serving it (off-peak). needless to say, they were hardly full (at least, the times when i took it)

btw.. just a few years back before the refurbishment excercise of the 1st-gen trains, anyone remembered a 4-carriage train? not for passenger service of course.. Always saw them transporting some small machines to Marina Bay Station.. the trains turns around at AMK from the Bishan Depot..

then, whenever passing by on CTE, can always spot this particular 4-carriage train...

willis_chong SG

The 4-car trains are money trains. :D Oh yea, 3 trains serving the Branch Line (B) is already enough. You see the CGL, 3 trains (during peak) at a freq of around 4 min is enough.

The C151 were not delivered with automatic voice announcements, and had to rely on the bell for almost a century. The bell is still available for use, particularly you can hear them at peak busy stations as secondary warning.

What abt the jurong east interchange aunouncement be4 the woodland extension?

Some announcements were in four languages, broadcast at one go.

I remember tat EW lines has 2 terminated points over at the east, one is Pasir Ris (current) and Changi Airport (discontinued) and at that time I think the middle platform wasnt use or there is an addional to it. correct me if I am wrong... and that time no need to alight at tanah merah mrt to change train and i've to see well which train terminates at changi airport which train terminates at pasir ris. I think this was around 2002-2004?
