Er, What is an AGM?
Where do you see
this?
Mainly in company announcements and news articles. You may also
have received an invitation to attend an AGM if you hold shares in
a company.
What does it mean?
AGM stands for annual general meeting, a yearly gathering of a
company's directors and shareholders.
All Singapore-incorporated firms must hold an AGM
every calendar year, and not more than 15 months apart.
Singapore-listed companies have the additional requirement of
holding their AGM within four months of their financial year
end.
Why is it important?
Directors of a company must be present its accounts to
shareholders at the AGM. Shareholders can then ask questions about
the company's performance and vote on resolutions, which are
usually administrative issues.
For most shareholders, this is the only chance they
get to meet the company's board and management. It does not hurt
that many large companies provide a sumptuous lunch spread after
the AGM.
So you want to use the phrase. Just say...
"This year, many companies are holding their AGMs on the same
day, so I will attend only the one that provides the best
lunch."
