Vietnam happiest country in Asia!

Vietnam is the 12th happiest country on earth, and the happiest in Asia, according to a study published Wednesday that measured people’s well-being and their impact on the environment. The tiny South Pacific Ocean archipelago of Vanuatu is the happiest in the Happy Planet Index, compiled by the British think-tank New Economics Foundation. Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica and Panama complete the top five.

Out of Asian nations Singapore was ranked lowest at 131. Island nations performed particularly well in the rankings. But Vanuatu, with a population of around 200,000, topped them all. “Don’t tell too many people, please,” said Marke Lowen of Vanuatu Online, the republic’s online newspaper. “People are generally happy here because they are very satisfied with very little,” he told The Guardian. “This is not a consumer-driven society. Life here is about community and family and goodwill to other people. It’s a place where you don’t worry too much.” “The only things we fear are cyclones or earthquakes.”

I only trust CNA which reported recently (in August 2009) about a 2006 survey that Singaporeans are generally happier than even the Vietnamese.

Exactly, modern living is not suited to human being's natural needs.

In Vanuatu, they live in close-knit communities. They have close family relationship, as well as community relationship.

They also perform custom dances and hold clan meetings often.

Meanwhile, their needs are met, shelter, food, clothing, and they even help each other and have been successful in socialism. For example, people will help with hut construction.

In Singapore, the situation is totally the reverse.

People live in cramped high rise buildings, family relation is weak, extended family and clan relation is even weaker, community relation is non-existent, nobody perform custom dances or hold tribal meetings. Socialism is zero, everything need money, people will not help you without money.

So in this situation, I believe we have strayed too far from our root.

We need to find a solution how to go back to a tribal society.

Well we can say the government plays a part contributing to Singapore's low ranking. But maybe the above highlights exactly that we are part of the reasons that make our own lives miserable here in Singapore.

He is the most important cause.

One of his faithful ministers, the late S Rajaratnam, echoed his sentiment by sneering,

"We want to teach people the government is not a rich uncle. You get what you pay for. We are moving in the direction of making people pay for everything."
