Thought I'd share my blog entry here.
Basically I went to the exhibition at National Library Level 10,
called Vignettes of Time. It lasts till end of December so if
you're free or passing by do take a look!! I not advertising or
anything, I just think it's a really good exhibition worth taking a
look.
After the exhibition I went on a research frenzy on the internet
about accounts of Singapore before 1819, and frankly there is very
limited knowledge and evidence of the civilisation that existed on
our land. The textbook will always tell you that Singapore is a
fishing village just because Raffles says so.
But Chow Yun Fatt tell me that Singapore is a pirate heaven in
the 14th century, and it might be from an excerpt from a movie but
there's actually solid accounts to back that up. The Malay Annals
and Wang Dayuan's journals point towards the fact that Singapore
was a thriving port with many pirates in the 14th century, and this
really piques my interest!!!!
Singapore was perhaps just a mere fishing village when Raffles
arrived because the Portugese destroyed our port with fire in
the 17th century, to prevent the Dutch from taking over this
strategic land. So before that, our country actually had a
civilisation!!!
I dunno bout you, but to me I'm very interested in discovering
Singapore's old history. And it will be so awesome if the
government actually bothers to conduct archaelogical excavations,
so much will be uncovered. But it's a pity they don't care =(
u got to change the music....
