Ris Low is Miss Singapore World 2009.
[1]
Low has been heavily criticised for her inability to speak
proper English as well as her apparent lack of intellect, displayed
during a fashion interview. However, some people have tried to
downplay the fracas by saying that most youths in Singapore also
speak in the same way. Ris Low's interview has sparked much
discussion about the pressing issue of Singlish among
Singaporeans, especially in youths these days. [2]
[3]
Low is now quite certain that she is studying for a diploma in
travel & tourism [4]
and one in nursing at Singapore's
Management Development Institute of Singapore [5].
There have been allegations on Singapore forums and websites
that Low won the crown underhandedly and is undeserving of the
title.[6][7]
There have also been calls for Low to be stripped of her title as
Miss Singapore World 2009, largely because of her poor command of
English. This was apparent in an interview with her
mispronunciation resulted in following phrases: "leopard
preens"(prints), "studying steel"(still studying), "something rad
(red) and loud, something that shouts me, boomz!",
"bigini"(bikini). [8][9].
In September 2009, it became known that she was convicted of
five charges of misappropriation, cheating using illegally obtained
credit cards, and impersonating their users' identities [10].
Miss Low is not aware that she needs to declare the offence and
only managed to confess 2 months after the pageant when she is
required to sign a contract. There may be some legal issues
involved if she needs to travel and she runs the risk of having her
title revoked.
