As weird as it may sounds, cats getting high on catnip is a hereditary thing.

cute cats

The catnip plant (Nepeta cataria), sometimes called catmint, produces a distinctive smell through the oil in its leaves (nepetalactone). This oil scent is well known for sending cats into a relaxed state of euphoria. You can grow catnip in the garden or even in a window box. This plant is fairly easy to grow although many owners find it easier to buy bags of dried leaves or catnip sprays. To dissuade a cat from nibbling your houseplants, provide it with it own pot of catnip. You could also try wiping the leaves of plants you want to protect with a solution of lemon juice and water.
