i created a new account and tried to connect with my friends on
messenger.
under the old account i can see my friends are online but the
new account shows offline.
any idea why?
Usually changing a password is enough, no need to create new
account.
probably your password wasn't strong enough, or could be someone
sharing your account leaked the password or hacked it.
When entering password, make sure that hotmail recognises your
password as a strong one.
