ram or cpu?

hi ppl. Wanted to upgrade my backup pc haha so came here to seek some advice. Currently running an e5400, 2 gb ram and a 4850 with accelero twin turbo.

Wonder wad should i go for?
A quad core lga775? Or a 4gb reaper ram upgrade? Pls advice Smile haha btw is ocz reaper ram good?

TBH, your backup PC doesn't quite need an upgrade. The specs are quite decent, IMO.

If you really do want to upgrade, upgrade the RAM to 4GB. The Reaper series are not meant for the regular Joe; rather, they are meant for people who think their RAM isn't fast enough to keep up with the CPU. You'd be better off getting Team Elites, OCZ Gold, or just plain Jane Value RAM. Make sure you choose memory rated for speeds that your motherboard can take, otherwise you'll be wasting cash. For example, you buy a pair of GEIL 1066MHz RAM, but your mobo can only support up to 800MHz RAM. Your RAM would only run at 800MHz, so there's your wasted speed.

oh… Upgrading cause it sometimes gets laggy while i’m doing some gaming/multitasking with it lol even though it’s a backup pc Smile Hmmm my mobo is gigabyte g41m es2l. It supports ram speeds up to 800 Smile but it can oc to 1066. So if i buy a pc 8500 ram kit will it be able to run at 1066 mhz? Thks Smile btw how fast will the pc go if i get a quad core for the processor instead? Will it go faster than a 4gb ram upgrade?

I had a Q6600 with 2GB of RAM. Wasn't fun.

If you buy 1066MHz RAM kits, you WILL need to OC the CPU to reach a 1066MHz bus speed.

Yes, at 800MHz. That's why it says 1066 (OC)

At 800MHz, you might as well go for Kingston Value Ram or something along that line.

hmmm… Then in that case if i get a q8200, would it be able to run games with higher fps than a 4gb ram upgrade? Anyways if i go for both and since the cpu fsb is 1333, will the ram be able to run at 1066? Thanks!

Your graphics card will still be the bottleneck in most games.

No, the RAM will not be able to run at 1066MHz unless you overclock. The motherboard will use a different memory divider.

@ram: i thought so long as the cpu fsb is more than 1066mhz okay liao? Cause q8200 has a 1333 fsb and since the ram would only need a 1066 fsb cpu…

Thing is, if the BIOS auto overclocked the memory to 1066 when you put in a CPU with 1333MHz FSB, what happened if you were running value RAM? Sure crash right? You need to OC the CPU. Also, if you OC the CPU you can get 3GHz+, which should be fine.

Seeing as you are running a G41-based system with an entry level dual core, there isn't much tangible benefit from running 1066MHz RAM. Just go for 800MHz.
