Help us so we can help you better.

What will you be using the cards for?

I notice that most of your selections are AGP-type cards... You trying to revive old systems or something? :)

Raraken SG

6600GT AGP, 7600GT AGP. 7800GT AGP, HD4870 - Look online, EOL already.

9600GT AGP - No such card exists

GTX260 is faster than HD4870, but just get a HD5770. Bang for the buck card.

If you want AGP, go for the XFX,Powercolor HD4650 AGP edition.

oh so no more at sls? I’m trying to revive an old system and build a new one at the same time. The old one is a P4 3.00 ghz com wif 512 ram and lousy fx 5200. Tot that by upgrading the graphics card might give it a new life and maybe play bf2 on high settings Smile what do ya think?

Raraken SG

Search online for an AGP card, you might be lucky. A 9800Pro went for about $20 recently.

you wanna run high settings you can start with adding RAM.

then change the GPU.

gigabyte radeon 4650 agp at the moment is one of the best agp cards i know of.

as for new system go for 5770. performance is very slightly lousier than a gtx260 but it consumes less power in idle and cooler in idle too. the price performance ratio of that card is excellent and in the future if you wanna upgrade you can always pick up a second 5770 if your mobo allows crossfire - they scale excellently.

hey guys i’ve got 2 systems in mind: which one do you guys think is better?
sys 1:
Intel Core i5-750
6gb ram
640 gb hdd
Nvidia gtx 260 1.8 gb
Sys 2:
Intel core i7-860
6gb ram (3dimms)
640 gb hdd
Ati radeon hd 5770
Which one do you pros think would last longer? I think both the 750 and 860 are quad cores right? So do they have roughly the same performance or one is better than the other? Thks Smile

Raraken SG

Take the 750 if all you would be doing is playing games or light encoding. Then use the 5770 and have 4GB of RAM. 6GB (3 DIMMS) is for the high-end i7-900 series.

GGINS SG

oh so the i7-860 can’t work as well on 3 dimms? Hmmm in terms of performance does the i7-860 do better than the i5-750?

Performance will suffer as the memory controller will revert to single channel.

i7-860 is faster than the 750 in heavily multithreaded apps. Other than that, nah.

GGINS SG

oh. Hmmm… So right now i’ve got an offer to free upgrade my 4 gb ram to 6 gb, 3 dimms, and my processor is a i5-750, should i go for it?

Free right? Take it lor. Then either sell the 3rd DIMM or buy one more DIMM to have 8GB dual-channel support.

GGINS SG

8 gb? But that will be 4 dimms, the processor supports tat? Em, if that’s the case, an i7-900 series can support up to 24 gb of ram so long as it is in multiples of 3? Then for the i5-750 and i7-800 series, ram must be multiples of 2 then? Haha thanks btw Smile

Raraken SG

Yep. i7-900 can support triple-channel memory, which is multiples of 3 DIMMS. i5 and i7-800 can only support RAM in multiples of 2. Anything other than these configurations will force the memory controller to use single channel, which is usually detrimental to performance.
