New Fibre optics?

WaterColdOne SG

well , recently recieved a letter concerning the installation of fibre optics by opennet .

any views on this? they claim that in the future , they will have Retail Service Providers ( RSPs) that will provide broadband and the such at speeds 1Gbps through a termination point? is it worth to get it installed or has anyone even heard about it?

Raraken SG

IIRC, this installation is free (Now anyway). If you decline, then I think if you want them to install later, you have to pay.

I forgot liao, can someone clarify?

105090 SG

yup thats right.. its free now and u need to pay if u want in future.. makes no sense to decline..
the cables will lie dormant till 2012 or 2015 iirc

SBSTransport SG

It's free and so just accept it and let them to install. I think at some point of time probably this year they may introudce a trial and those who have installed or selected may get to test the new internet before anyone else does.

I find the whole process quite weird, my block was slated for installation around late 2011 but received the letter yesterday, while the block which is just opposite me is still slated for installation around late 2011.

Just install it as it is free. If you reject you offer, you will have to pay AT LEAST $220 next time if you want it.

The free installation is only up to 15m from your doorstep. Any extentions will be extra charged.

The fibre optics cables will NOT lie dormant. Only few will start to use the fibre optic technologu now. It will be FULLY OPERATIONAL on 2012 ( if you use a service provider that uses fibre optics )

And by that time, there SHOULD be more players other than just Singtel, Starhub, M1. So.. just look forward for a 1Gbps speed? ( i doubt singaporeans can fully utilize it )

WaterColdOne SG

haha yea , i doubt most singaporeans will actually need that kind of speed too :D but hey , 15 m free , might as well take it , anyway , its only $33 extra for 5 m . mines scheduled to be installed somewhere this month =\ a few blocks from me are getting the installation now lol

frezmen SG

hahas.. i see those workers everyday under my block doing the cabling works.. lol
