Sony 16Gb Thumbdrive

Hi, i'm thinking of buying a thumbdrive, the sony 16GB that one. They say the Microvault Vistual Expander (the sony software) preloaded in the thumbdrive automatically compresses the file up to 3 times the size. Is it rly tat good? Cos if it is, i get almost up to 48GB of memory space?

Also, i wud like to noe, wat is the data TRANSFER rate for External HDD? How many MB/sec? Sony's thumbdrive is transfer speed is11MB/s leh. Reading speed is 30MB/s. Is it fast?

Transfer rate for ext. HDD is about 30MB/s read and write. For flash memory, I don't really know about usual speed for read/write, but I get about 10MB/s write and ~25MB/s read on my 2GB Toshiba.

And don't believe what they say about compression ratios. Up to 3x, but usually is ~ 1.25-1.5x?

used to have a 512mb one, with the software too. what i can say is that it is actually useless, as it takes quite long to compress and decompress the files using the software.

Is it? Oh ok. Erms, quite shocking to hear that. It quto compresses and decompresses?Or is there a setting to stop the compressing thing?

Yep, think of it as a WinRAR/WinZIP for thumbdrives. Remember how long they take? Compressing 700MB is a nightmare, much less 4GB or even 16GB worth of data.

Unless you plan to transfer 48 GB of textual documents (eg. Word), don't bother with the compression utility. The disk space saved from compressing media files such as JPEGs, PNGs, MP3s and AVIs is close to zilch because they are already in a compressed format.

If you need to transfer lots of stuff, do consider getting a portable hard disk instead.
