Hide the new tab button in the tab bar

Add the line below to your userChrome.css file (*):

.tabs-newtab-button {display: none;}

i been using the new tab button on the toolbar since the early version that y i find the new tab bar on the tab window unecessary

It's compatible. The skin is working with Firefox 3.5 since RC days.
