1. There is a man who lives on the top floor of a very tall building.
Everyday he gets the elevator down to the ground floor to leave the building to go to work. Upon returning from work though, he can only travel half way up in the lift and has to walk the rest of the way unless it's raining! Why?

1. He is too short and can't reach the high buttons. When it rains he uses his umbrella.

2. Why is it better to have round manhole covers than square ones? This is logical rather than lateral, but it is a good puzzle that can be solved by lateral thinking techniques. It is supposedly used by a very well-known software company as an interview question for prospective employees.

Square manholes can be flipped diagonally and thus dropped. Round ones can't

This one is mathematical... a circle is the only thing which has infinite number of lines of symmetry.. which means the cover cannot fall into the manhole

He was suffering from hiccups... so he wanted water, not booze which is sold in a bar...

The barkeep, instead of giving him a glass, pulls a gun on him, shocking him into losing his hiccups.

Cured of his hiccups, the man thanks the barkeep and leaves because he did not want any booze.

Street lamps are automatically turned on.. they were not on, therefore they were either broken or it was day...

Car did not turn on lights.. either it was daylight or the driver's an idiot.

Put the 2 together, and the fact that the man in black did not get run down, it was day...
