Desktop boots up and gives weird screech

I started up my desktop, booted it, went into the XP splash screen, all is well, see the desktop, then after I clicked the desktop, in about 10 secs the computer gives a huge screech (like ambulance sound??) and auto-shuts down.

Is it a PSU problem?? Or a mobo/graphics problem?

I've taken out 2 of the 3 optical drives i used to connect in the PC...doesnt work...

But the problem is this auto-shut down happens during different periods...either when xp is running (can run like 5mins) or even on startup XP splash screen!

1.test with another HDD.

2.the screech is caused physically or what?
disconnect ur sound..including PC sound and see if U still get the screech.

offhand I still think its the HDD. Laughing Mr. Green

ok the sound seems more like a "bee bo bee boo" type...like ambulance. Then it shuts the whole system down, i.e. fans off, the screen goes blank, everything stops.

HDD problem? Gosh. That means I need to buy a new hdd =(

first of all...a "bee boo bee boo" sound doesnt qualify as a screech to me...so if I am getting the correct idea about the bee boo bee boo sound...U need to find out where is it coming from.

U can try switching off ur speakers and see if the sound is coming from ur speakers...if its from speakers...which one?external ones that U connect to the green jack or from the PC internal speakers.

from there U can decide what to troubleshoot.

At the same time...do read up on ur mobo's manual...could be as simple as changing the CMOS battery...

if U are comfortable with opening up the casing...check and see if the fan on the mobo...ie the CPU fan...running or not....or any fans not working... Laughing Mr. Green

Neither do I know of any virus which does that...

I suspect might be some monitoring programs, like hard disk or temperature monitoring programs, that gives off this alarm when things go bad. For example, hard disk is going to fail, temperature is too high, etc

After that, it shuts down the machine.

Ooops...ok...it's a bee boo sound...sorry. External speakers all off...so it HAS to be internal....

Getting a new Mobo to check for the problem is a tad expensive....

You can get an second hand mobo if you want. But make sure it's compatible with your processor. There's no such thing as one-size-fits-all mobo. The mobo and the processors are the most picky hardware of all. If it doesn't fit and you force it, either mobo or processor spoil or both spoil.
