mayi dont add until 4Gb Reasons:32Bit os only reads max 3.25Gb RAM(Doesnt count graphic ram) if you wanna read more than 4GB only 64bit os can anyway no po...

ShinDoBoIx SG

can i ask what is virtual memory for ? and if windows dont hav virutal memory…. will windows work ?

^tamago^ SG

u need lots of virtual memory if u wan to keep many apps running in the background at the same time, if not u gotta invest in lots of RAM.

eagle SG

virtual memory is a section on the hard disk set aside by windows which functions like RAM.

What happens is if there's not enough RAM, some things not required at the moment in the RAM will be moved to the virtual memory section, and the more important things at the moment will be moved into the RAM. This is because RAM is faster than the hard disk

ndmmxiaomayi SG

Not just Windows use virtual memory... all operating systems use that... just that they have different names... Laughing

Cool-gal SG

tat means i need to upgrade my RAM. my pc has been laggy lately..
Sad Sad
afew days ago, my pc oso prompt me for virtual memory, so i deleted some temp files n cookies.
mayi, will it help??

eagle SG

your PC may be laggy because you have too many background programs running at the same time, or perhaps due to too many fragmented files in your hard disk.

Thus, deleting temp files and cookies would not help much.

Btw, how much RAM do you have?

Xcert SG

it should help...but it also depends on whether U have set enough HDD space for virtual memory. Laughing Mr. Green

how much RAM do U have now?

LatecomerX SG

For your first question, the guys/gals above me have explained enough.

For the second one, yup, it will still work, but if you ever run out of memory, Windows will forcefully, and rather randomly, terminate some of the running processes and programs - including anti-viruses and firewalls. Happened to me many times while afk-ing in GE.

Cool-gal SG

my RAM only 256MB but im not sure of the availability.
HDD available 38GB.
my pc so antique.
Embarassed

eagle SG

desktop or laptop?

how old?

operating system is?

it would do you good to find a cheap/free 512mb piece of ram and slot it into the computer

wishboy SG

scarly is DDR1 then 512Mb will cost.......... Shocked

UrPwned SG

u can increase the virtual memory to improve the speed.

right click on my computer, properties, advanced, performance, setting, advanced, virtual memory, change, in the text box change the num to something like 1000 or 2000, depending on your physical ram..

LatecomerX SG

I don't think it makes the computer faster, as accessing the hard disk is much slower than the one of RAM.

UrPwned SG

VM is stored in hard drive, and is obviously slower than the RAM..and when your computer reads data quicker from RAM than from Harddisk, it is betta to purchase a RAM than to increase VM

But if at that particular moment when there is no RAM available for programs or runs low, the VM is used in place of RAM or compensate.

Increasing the VM of a system will improve overall performance, especially if u constantly use programs that use a lot of memory.

LatecomerX SG

Aiya, if constantly use memory-intensive progs then buy more RAM lo.

I still don't get your view of increasing VM would result in an improvement in system performance, when you have already mentioned that VM is slower than RAM.

eagle SG

it depends.

it is like........ at least there a space set aside on the hard disk for this to happen. If too little is set when more is required, it will be slower.

xXMugenXx SG

This feature is catered to help you boost slightly in the performance of your computer if you are running on less than 2Gb rams.

If you are running more than 2Gb of rams turn it off it will be faster Very Happy
for those who are using less than 2Gb of rams you will have to do maths

Best Virtual memory setting for your ram will be [1.5/2x(Ramsize)]
anyway dont mistaken the boost as a big diff it's just small diff

FBI SG

i ahve 2gb ram and i still feel that it's not enough..

xXMugenXx SG

Mind listing down your hardwares???

Etc:Graphic card/Motherboard/processor/ram types???

as far as i know 2Gb can run fast in XP and Vista
if you dont mind listing down your computer specs let me check out whats lagging you??

ndmmxiaomayi SG

2GB of RAM for Vista is running moderately fast even after all the tweaking. I've just upgraded mine yesterday. Compared to XP, I would call it slow. It would be best to up the amount of RAM for Vista to the max - 4GB.

Shutting down time has been improved in Vista, but startup time has gone down the hill... ironic. Laughing
