Plug it into another PC and try. If it's IDE hard disk, remember to change the jumper settings to slave, get into BIOS and check that the settings are read correctly.

Boot up from the master hard disk and see if it can be detected.

regardless maxtor, seagate, wd, hitachi, fujitsu, etc...
