ASUSTek Computer (ASUS) has unveiled a new internal blu-ray drive, the BC-1205PT. The BC-1205PT is a BD-ROM/DVD±R/RW/CD-RW drive that is capable of reading data from and writing data at 12X DVD+/- R, 6x DVD+/- RW, 4X DVD+/-R (DL) and 5X DVD-RAM speeds. The drive utilizes SATA interface, 4MB data buffer and is capable of reading both single and dual layer Blu-Ray media. In addition, the new drive comes with Asus' patented DDSS II (Double Dynamic Suspension System II) technology that helps minimize the vibration caused by the spindle motor, and LCT (Liquid Crystal Tilt) technology that provides enhanced pick up head accuracy.

Yeah… not many Blu-ray drives out there yet, not to say even a popular format. Give it another 2 to 3 years to become popular…

It's around a 4-digit price now. But just like the first DVD writer which costed more than $50,000 at launch in 1997, its price would probably drop significantly in 3 - 5 years' time.

4-digit? And its not even a BD writer.
People kept complaining how Sony ruin PS3 by setting high price, but the whole system is only under 1k with a BD drive. What a steal.

I think for the Asus case, if we are paying so much it's because of the patented technology, not because it's supposed to cost that much.

Ok, I mistook that for a writer, sorry. It would probably cost 300 - 400 SGD at the moment anyway. But still, its retail price will drop to what DVD-ROM are selling for now in a few years' time.
