Some of the terms used there:

General purpose - basically, it's just normal PC usage. Those listed also have a nice GUI, better than Windows with less lag. Though some might find Symphony OS a bit weird in terms of looks.

Live CD - allows you to boot to it, use it without ever installing it on a hard disk. Great for those who want to test Linux but not without formatting and partitioning your hard drive. Nearly all Linux distributions allow that.

Mini - As its name suggests, the file size of such distributions are very small. They can easily fit into your thumbdrive. One caveat is that they offer only the very basic stuffs. Of course there will be exceptions. Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux are two of them. Small as their file sizes are, they are actually jam-packed with lots of goodies.

Do read the 3rd and 4th page, they will help you a lot in deciding what distributions to use. They can save you a lot of time downloading and troubleshooting.

decided to use this thread to ask for help instead of opening another Linux thread.

I am now trying out Fedora Core 6 and is trying to install a driver for my Prolink wireless USB adapter.

I downloaded the driver from the Prolink website and managed to unzip it in Desktop using $ tar zxvf 2006_0214_RT73_Linux_STA_Drv1.0.2.0.tar.gz

so now I have a RT73_Linux_STA_Drv_1.0.2.0/Module directory in my Desktop.

When I go into the directory...I see a lot of source files in *.c and *.h

the readme file states that the next step is $ cp Makefile.6 ./Makefile but this command cant work...the error I get is "cp: cannot create regular file './Makefile': Permission denied"

ok...then dunno what I did but there is a Makefile in the directory now...next step should be "make all" but I again get error message "No such file or directory.Stop."

Anyone can try out the file and help me install the driver?

Permission denied - you are not administrator.

Use the command "sudo ./Makefile" , without the quotes.

If sudo fails, use su.

Um. I got ubuntu iso, but I can't seem to install it. Any help with picture? Thanks Very Happy

Boot up to CD, select the first option to run and install Ubuntu. Ubuntu will run in memory without installation. If you want to install, double click on Install on the desktop.

sudo didnt work...and I got a lecture.

then I tried the su...looks ok so far

after that I tried "make all" to compile the source codes.Error.

Any idea how to settle?

Go to /lib/modules

See if 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 folder is there. If it's not there, create one, with the same exact name.

If it's there, check if there is a build folder. No folder, create one. If there's a folder, you probably need to download some compiling packages... the GCC and G++ packages.

Make sure you download the development files as well. Usually named GCC-dev or something similar.

the 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 folder is there.

I can sort of see the build folder in terminal but I cant see it using desktop...so I dont really know if its there or not.

assuming that its not there...U mentioned that I have to download the gcc and G++ packages....where do I download them?I tot gcc comes together with Linux/Fedora?

The build file looks like some script to me. I'm not familiar with Fedora, but should be similar to the command "./configure"

There's something similar to Windows Add/Remove Programs in Fedora... try there.

Click on the Hat, point to System Tools or System.

tried out the Add/Remove thingy...nothing helpful there...

perhaps I should be looking at changing distro....

now...where is that Ubuntu CD that I have....emm....
