I bought a maxtor 320 GB external hard disk. But when I run it, the free space is only 298 GB. Why is that so? Kana cheated? Sad

Yes, it's possible to. Plug in your external hard disk. Let Windows installed the necessary stuffs. Once done, do this:

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

Select Removable Media on the left hand side. You should see your hard disk.

Delete all partitions, then right click and select Create.

That's the rough steps, can't recall.

The more you buy, the more you lose, because you only get 1000/1024 of the claimed hard disk space.

Did you read the fine print that manufacturer defines 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes while OS defines it by the actual definition of 1GB = 1,049,165,824 bytes? Laughing

(i also bought one but someone got it for me, he will pass it to me on wednesday.
i was told the 250GB one costs only $30 more, but it's bigger so i chose the smaller, 80GB one).

I can't find my hard disk in the removable storage .. and yes it is connected to the PC.

but by your definition... it should be 305 GB of usable disk space instead of 298....

If it's not there, try looking under Disk Management.

Ok found. The problem now is I have some other partitions from my internal hard disks. If I delete all partition, would they be gone?

yeah i realised, but u noe, my 160GB only have 149GB, so i guess something's wrong with the calculation somewhere Laughing Confused

No, don't delete your internal hard disk partitions.

Select your external hard disk, then delete the partitions.
