I just installed Vista Ultimate a few days back, and I had encountered many problems. I'm running on a MSI 478 mobo, p4 3ghz processor, radeon powercolour x700 pro, 512(256 x 2) ram.

I'm having some problem when I'm playing NFS: Carbon. Firstly, it takes very long (approx~1min) to load a game. Worst of all, the graphic sometimes hangs during the game/race, for eg, there are no roads in front then it hanged for serveral sec.

So is it the problem with my ram, or my grahpic card or vista ultimate(which I heard the min required ram is 1gb)?

or should i go back vista home basic(min require is 512)?

EDIT: i used another disc called Microsoft XP Home N Edition, it's able to boot up the com however, after the blue screen saying windows is starting up, it says

STOP: C0000221 Unknown hard Error
\Systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

like my lecturer said something like this before, game programmers anyhow shoot one, as long it works, it works.

so the first problems u will encounter will always be with the games.

as for the first question, its maybe because of the graphic driver.. u need to get an updated one from ATI website (for vista)

there's no need to downgrade. its no difference.... after all, u can disable nice GUI and having the same interface as home vista home basic, but however the functionality is more than basic

its true only if enable all nice interface..eg aero.. dreamscene.. if u disable ,minimum can go is 300mb+/-

Vista Ultimate has everything... you need at least 1GB of RAM and 256MB of VRAM for graphics card in order for it to work properly...

As Vista is new, expect lots of problems, from lack of driver support to incompatibility. Although MS say they are working on it, I think it's better to wait for manufacturers to produce those drivers.

If you are just a normal user, just use Home Basic. Bear in mind that Home Basic lacks a lot of things, so to tweak it is quite hard. And you may find you need to download a lot of things off the web just to get some programs working... those who are into networking, never get Basic. You will run into problems with networking in Basic.

The differences between the 5 versions of Vista are huge. You can turn off the features in better versions, but you can't turn on a feature in basic. That's the caveat.

Vista Basic is really just for basic needs.

You should change back to WinXP for the time being...... still got many many problem with Vista. It need too much Ram to run well and then still have drivers problem for the next few mths. Creative & Nivida both say they have not come out with a good driver yet for the time being...... some drivers are only in Beta.

One Tech website I read, say that Vista will run slower than XP with 1GB of ram...... about the same speed with 2GB. Will only be faster with 3GB onwards. Since Most M/B only have 4 Ram slot.... most ppl can only upgrade to 4GB for the time being.

Shocked he's talking about ram thingy.. so actually not much difference between an ultimate and baisc( in terms of ram usage) if u disable nice features in ultimate and actually looks like basic. the only a little difference is that some extra little functions add up at eat a little of your RAM. other than this, nice interface eats the most.

Anyway, XP can run on 64MB of RAM. Just that it will crawl like turtle. Try it. Laughing

What Vista disc did you use? Upgrade disc or did you do a clean install?

For upgrade disc, you will have to remove Vista before loading XP.

If you use the retail version of Vista (not upgrade disc), uninstall Vista, then install XP.

During the installation of Windows, something probably went wrong.

ntdll is an important file in Windows, and that is corrupted. You need to reinstall Windows.

If you still get a blue screen after reinstalling Windows, there might be some hardware problems. Probably due to Vista...

Thats the scary part..... use up about 1GB of RAM just to run Vista.... what happen if i need to run Photoshop or Ulead Video Studio Question This two program is known for its heavy use of system Ram..... with 1GB used up, whats left to run these programs So, the fact is that Vista will work well only if you use 2GB and above......

Lucky that price of RAM is falling..... my 1GB 1066MHz AData RAM drop from $195 to $159....... wait a little longer, then I can try running dual channel RAM for my system.... Mr. Green

firstly i can tell u that u cannot uninstall vista. or downgrade it.

the only way to "uninstall" it is to migrate your files and reformat it.
