Networking - File sharing problem

I've just created a home network (Pc and laptop) to share files quickly and share printer.

I've managed to get everything working fine until yesterday, I discovered that everyone, as long as they are in the network can access the files in the shared folder. Therefore, I followed the steps to create permission for my laptop to only allow access from the PC.

But then, the problem comes

As you can see in the pic, the only location shown there is the laptop. which means I cant see users on my PC which leads to me being unable to add users from my PC and thus unable to set permission for them to access.

Anyone knows whats wrong?

This problem hit RP students hard. I swear to remember.

Here's how

Open My Computer

Go to Tools > Folder Options

Click on the View tab.

Scroll all the way down and untick this box: Use simple file sharing (Recommended)

Apply the settings, close My Computer and close all opened folders.

Then try again.

If it doesn't work, go to Start > Run and type in cmd

Type in this: sc start Services

Hmm.. I've done the unchecking of simple file sharing part. Thats how i manage to get access to the permission function.

as for the sc start services....

wah sian i still cannot see..
by right la.. if u created a home or small office network, u'll be able see all the computer connected to network in.

star>run>cmd

input: net view

u will see something like //xxxxxxx

and of course la.. the computer's printer or any network devices must be connected to the network den u can see net view

Cannot be, I succeeded.

Maybe need to use Microsoft's name for this.

sc start lanmanserver

When it's successful, you will get this message:

hmm the sc start lanmanserver got another error
[SC] StartService FAILED 1056:

An instance of the servide is already running.

erm lol .. the problem as stated in my 1st post still exist... I cant add users that are on my PC.. and thus my PC is unable to get access to the shared folder on my lappy

one thing i notice..

since your PC is the one going to view the files from your lappy... den your lappy should be the one which must add the PC into its allow list ma.. not the other way round

yup correct... but I need to set permission on my laptop to allow PC users to access.

The problem now is that i am unable to add them to my allow list as the only users i can add is from the laptop itself. (refer to the pic in my 1st post and you'll notice that the only "Location" shown is laptop.)

I think i'll need to find a way to get my PC shown on the location screen to be able to add them.

You are supposed to do the changes on the laptop... because the folders are on your laptop, not your PC...

Did you close all your opened folders when making the changes?

Also, make sure simple file sharing is turned off for the all the PCs as well, and start lanmanserver service on the PCs.

hmm i've just turned off the simple file sharing on PC, and the lanmanserver on PC also stated that it has already started... lol but still cant... hehe

Hmm... weird.

Just curious, are you using XP Home or XP Pro?

did u run though the network wizard?

if yes... that time u add you got specify they under the same workgroup name?)(eg. MS home)
