Graphic card problem?

Its okay as long as they are supported and we can take ram problem out of the troubleshooting equation. Something close to this was discussed in another topi...

Farmerseed SG

Mayi suggested the card going which is also possible. You can search the net with keywords and you will see lots of people experiencing the same or similar problems.

Most users writing in with problems here uses OEM computers or similar computers with pieces and parts replaced here and there. Its unlike modded or assembled PC entusaits where all the hardware specifications and software version are always printed in their help/ problem threads.

If TS can give us all the minor details and more perhaps each one of us can work in different ways and suggest a solution. Right now and always in situation like this the best thing to do is to take the problem one step at a time. Narrow down the possibilities.

Of course TS can get a new card and use it and maybe things will be fine but its not a luxury everyone has or are willing to spend on spare parts for testing and replacement. That's why they are here for.

X2 agree so now we just gotta sit and wait for the TS to update the Gfx drivers and update us(if problems still persist) before proceeding

His game WOW3 is not processor nor graphics hungry, and we don't know when the grahics card will go. The beep only sounded when the comp is handling games. We don't know what is the detail ratings and spec of his PSU. Prescott. No temperature readout provided for our eval. Encoding is best with multi-threading or hyperthreading enabled. Many things.

I can't get into the Biostar webpage so i can't get his mobo's detailed spec for now.

The game only requires 8.1X so see if the card manufacturer has released any drivers update since 8.1X. But i doubt it will help since most 9xxx series ATI cards comes with the 8X drivers in the drivers disc.

Firstly, I'm really very greatful to you guys namely orion and FarmerSeed. You guys have been really patient and helpful with me Very Happy

Updated my graphics driver but com still shuts down. Not 100% sure if this is the correct one, but I got the driver update from:

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

> Professional/Home
>> Radeon
>>> Radeon 9200 series

I've been playing W3 for the past 1 1/2 years or so and initially this problem happened. I added an additional fan and the problem went away for a long time until recently (about one and a half months ago), it resurfaced.

My DirectX is 9.0 and above. As for

I'm not too sure if you're referring to the DirectX version.

Farmerseed SG

Yeh its directX.

Where did you add the fan to? Add it to the graphics card heatsink?

aRcTiC_sTaR SG

Er no I added one fan below the graphics card. It takes up a slot below the AGP slot.

orionlight SG

For starters, try monitoring your Gfx temperature by downloading this program call Atitools. In the mean time also monitor the temperature of your CPU.

farmerseed, his motherboard is an OEM from MSI, don't think you can find it from their website

Farmerseed SG

Finally get into the Biostar site. Okay the Biostar motherboard model here i have got some very close.

http://www.biostar.com.tw/products/mainboard/board.php?name=U8668-D%20v6

Type 'P4M266' at the search box.

I will try to isolate Biostar from MSI. They are different.

It seems like all the motherboard in that series supports ram speeds up to DDR266 only. The only difference is the 'A' behind the chipset 'VIAP4m266'.

Maybe TS can check his computer user manual and give us details of the ram maximum suported speed? If its only DDR266 we may need to find out how he ever was able to use the pair of ram modules.

edit: Use this info more reference and additional read. It does not address to the TS's problem since the reference materials used do not relate to the hardware TS is having.

orionlight SG

huh?Isn’t his mainboard an oem from MSI as seen by the cpu-z screenshot?

aRcTiC_sTaR SG

Okay will do in the evening. Gonna get a fan for the AGP to see if it helps.

/be back later

Farmerseed SG

Yes its a logical thing to do. If the problem can be worked around with just a fan replacement it will be better Very Happy

If you have a spare 80mm fan sitting around doing nothing you can also use it to cool the graphics card heatsink. I did it on a mine with some length of plastic cable tie around and over the graphics card width.

Farmerseed SG

My apologies, its MSI Microstar not Biostar. You are correct. Embarassed

Farmerseed SG

I cannot find an exact match. From the range of VIA chipset only a couple match close with VT8235 southbridge. Can only find an addition of 'A' on the model number.

XTransbus SG

you know.you can actually buy graphics card fan at SLS. It's at the5th storey if i'm not wrong at the back where many of the pc spare parts are. Not quite sure if you can find one for ati but i saw some for nvidia.

Did you update any drivers recently before the crash or added something?

Farmerseed SG

Cooling fans with rear chassis mounting brackets will do.

aRcTiC_sTaR SG

Added a mini fan for the AGP's heatsink but my com still shut down.

Upon boot up, I entered CMOS and I found a clue why my com has been shutting down on its own.

The CPU's temperature was at 79 degrees celsius, and the settings were set to shut down if the temperature reached 85 degrees celsius to prevent overheating.

Since I haven't changed any settings since, I wonder why the CPU heats up so easily nowadays. Is it advisable to alter the shutdown-temperature settings? At max it can be set to 95 degrees celsius before it auto shuts down.

Farmerseed SG

Its too risky and a norm for the prescott since this range of processors was once a tea-break discussion topic. Since you were at 85 threshold and the processor can hit that range when you encode multi-task and play games, there's no telling if it can even reach boiling point!

Arctic if you are very sure that the processor temperatire is causing problems then i have a suggestion. You may want to look into more advanced cooling solution like a 3rd party processor heatsink fan. Use that instead of the stock HSF provided with the prescott processor.

But before you do that can you do some spring cleaning on the overall of your computer assembled parts and blow out the dust gathering in between the fins of the processor fan and heat sink?

aRcTiC_sTaR SG

My mainboard is a P4MAM-V.

Can't find the exact model on MSI's website. The closest I could get is either the P4MAM2-V or the P4MAM-L.

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_trp_list.php

RAM is ok as it supports up to PC3200 DDR-400 modules, which I'm using. Seems like it's the CPU overheating that is causing the shut downs.

XTransbus SG

i'll recommend something like this or get a water cooling system for around 200 for the cooler-master ones. You might wanna change your cpu casing also because if it's smaller, it tends to be hotter sometimes

orionlight SG

TS, try reseating your present intel stock HSF or just get a good third party heatsink, don’t waste the money on those entry level water cooling, it’s simply not worth it.Also improve the air flow of your casing by buying stronger fans for both intake and exhaust.
