Can other players play the file concerned? If not then maybe the
problem lies with you hardware or hardware driver.
In my experience, if you computer can handle it, VLC will play it.
It is unsurpassed as a player.
Alternatively, and this is to be treated as a last ditch effort
type of thing, try d/ing the FFDshow codecs. That will allow your
Media players to play almost anything as well.
