The Blue Screen of Death

Just five minutes ago while I was surfing sgforums and a Diablo II strategy website I received the infamous Blue Screen of Death.

I immediately switched off my laptop and waited a few minutes. Now, upon startup, everything seems normal. Weird. I don't know what's wrong.

I don't know what to do now besides doing a virus scan using Trend Micro. Any suggestions?

Should I do a hijackthis scan and post the results here or something?

Erm, can you be more exact on Blue Screen of Death? What message you see from there?

Anyway you can right click "My Computer">Manage>Computer Management (Local)>System Tools>Event Viewer
Check what is the last event you had before entering BSoD.
Check both Application and System.

Start your Diablo II again and see if you get the error again. Then copy down the errors, especially the boxed ones:

just curious, how do make that screenshot of the blue screen???
normally pressing "printscrenn" and then paste in in MSpaint sure wont work.
software that can save screen shot wont be working when the blue screen comes.
so how?

Several things:

1. I was pretty spooked out by the BSOD and immediately switched off my computer after a minute of staring at the screen. I didn't know what to do.

2. I did look at the words on the screen, but they were all very blurry. I could only make out some vague instructions like 'Your computer has undergone a critical error.....'

3. I was surfing sgforums and a Diablo website (www.infoceptor.com) at the time of the BSOD. I wasn't playing Diablo II. I have been surfing both websites for years with no problems.

Besides surfing the Net, are you doing anything else? Any programs are opened, say Windows Media Player?

Ok I did what you said, and this is what I got when I checked System:

This error at 10.04 pm roughly corresponds to the time I got the BSOD.

I'm a computer idiot, and it's all Greek to me. My computer seems to be working fine now, but then again, all seemed fine when I got the BSOD.

Hmm... MSN Messenger. That's about it.

I also have ZoneAlarm firewall and Trend Micro OfficeScan in the background.

I don't think so either. Which is why I'm vexed at the moment.

Anyway, I'm going offline now, and I'll continue monitoring my computer over the next few days. If I do get another BSOD, I'll be careful to take note of the error message and post here again.

In my opinion, your combined usage of Trend Micro and ZoneAlarm is a sure way of inviting BSODs. And usually, BSODs are pointers to memory violation or conflict errors, brought on by applications, or failing RAM modules or a combination of software and hardware faults.

Note, Firewalls and antivirus apps suck up memory. Your use of both Trend Micro and ZoneAlarm just increase memory usage, and ZoneAlarm has got security issues. You should do a Google search on Zone Alarm security flaws - you will find juicy articles about it.

This time I managed to get the error message off the blue screen:

I think there are problems with your USB controller, based on this Microsoft Support article.

Did this happen when you are trying to start or shut down the computer? If yes, it's quite likely that it's your USB controller and you probably have to change your motherboard.

If this article doesn't help, the next nearest article I found is this. All you have to do is to download the file, and see if it helps. Update us again.

The BSoD occurred while I was updating my Blogspot blog (using Firefox). I was also browsing sgforums in another window. Other programs running in the background are ZoneAlarm firewall, Trend Micro Officescan, and MSN Messenger 7.5.

I've read both links you provided, and I think it's the second error that I'm experiencing, since it didn't occur when I was booting up my laptop. I'll download the patch later since I don't have my laptop with me. Right now I'm using my office computer.

And yeah, I guess I'll follow the previous person's advice of not using Trend Micro and ZoneAlarm simultaneously. I guess I'll uninstall Trend Micro and download AVG instead. As for the firewall, I'll go scout for another free firewall.

I'll download the patch later tonight and will let you know if anything happens.

Arrgh... yet another BSoD last night! I had just finished printing some MS Word documents when I suddenly got this:

Going to the Microsoft support page didn't help much, for there are many possible scenarios for the 0x00000050 stop error and the 'page fault' message.

I give up. I'm going down to the Toshiba Service Center at NUS tomorrow (my Toshiba laptop was bought under NUS). If it really turns out that my motherboard's screwed up and needs replacing, I may or may not decide not to repair it at all depending on the cost.

No point spending $500-$600 replacing the entire hardware when I can get a decent low-end PC for under $1K. I'm not into high-powered applications anyway; I just need it for my countless reports, presentations and research.
