Please Help With This Problem (Transfer of File Between 2 Cp

Hello,

I have two computers at home.

One computer is running Win98.

The other is running WinXP.

I want to format my WinXP comp, and then install Win98 onto it.

I have a question before I do this.

Is it possible to transfer files between 2 computers running Win98?

I see at the back of my comps, there are network plugs / plug for network card. Is it possible I just use a network cable and connect 1 end of the cable onto 1 computer and the other end of the cable onto the other comp? Then I transfer through the Network Neighbourhood or something like that?

I knew that theres a special USB connector that will work. However, 98 with Xp not sure.

For files, the best is just copy every file to a CD or DVD then paste. Making backup disc in Xp might not work sometimes in 98.

You can do that with a speical cable, called corss cable. It is not the normally cable.

Cross cable? Is that the network cable? The one used for broadband internet?

So I can just connect the cross cable from 1 comp to the other comp? Then the 2 computers can see each other?

The 2 comps will be running Win98.

The cross cable is special made, you may have to buy it from sim lim, but it is not the cable you mentioned. if you have that cable, you can just direct connect two pc. win98 not a problem. your problem is where to get that cable.

Yes, you will be able to do that. However, you must use the right cable. It is called a crossover cable. It's a little bigger than those telephone cables, called RJ-45 cables. To tell the difference between a crossover cable and straight-through cable, hold the heads side-by-side and compare. If the wiring of the cables are the same, it means that the cables are straight-through. If the wiring is different, then it is a crossover cable.

I have a few cables at home. I just did a check on them.

Must the cable have 8 colours inside the head?

I have one which have 8 colours, but same order of colour, so it must be the straight-through type.

But I have one which only have 4 colours inside, the other 4 are blank/ not filled/ not occupied. And this cable has the colour order partly reversed.

By the way, I can use both the 8 colour cable and also the 4 colour cable to surf internet. I just tested them, both cables also work.

What is this 4 colour cable? Does this qualify as cross cable?

It must have 8 colours, because it has 8 pins in the head. There are 4 solid colours and 4 are stripped.

Not quite sure for the 4-colour cable though. I know the ones shown in the pictures.

Can ask something? Is it possible to connect 2 computers using this cross-cable and make them see each other if one is running Win98 and the other running WinXP?

jus take out the bloody hard drive and copy in the com that`s working well
save money and no hassles
and it doesnt even matter wat OS u use..

Yes, u can see each other computer in network neighbourhood, if u connect a crosscable between the two computer. But u must assign static ip address to both computer and both of the computer must be in the same subnet. Also u must enable filesharing and share out some of the drives. Make sure both computer has installed microsoft network login

Has anybody ever tried this before:

Installing WinXP from a virtual CD-ROM drive.

Meaning, you dont put in a real physical WinXP CD-ROM, just run a software program of virtual CD-ROM drive and then mount the files.

Can install WinXP from virtual CD-ROM drive?

It will be running Win98 prior to the WinXP installation attempt.

Why don't you copy the files into CDs? You don't have writeable CD Drive?

Since you have broadband, why don't you backup your files online into gmail (2.7gigs x any number of free accounts but each must not be more than 10mb)

Lastly how can anybody want to remove XP and replace with 98!!!????

It is possible to downgrade XP back to Windows 95, 98 and ME.

However, it is not possible to downgrade back to Windows 2000 or Windows NT.

you can get it to be the same workgroup...then enable sharing in the properties...

for example
1)go to my computer...right click properties->computer name->rename this computer or join a domain->click change
2)set both computers as the same workgroup name...
3)go to whatever drive or folder you wanna back up...then enable sharing...i think win 98 also can...
4)go to my network places and look at the side or right click...look for something called view workgroup computers..
5)you should see the other computer's name...then click it...and start copying...
