Computer Cannot Play DVD?

Probably nothing to do with Windows Media Player. It's just the manufacturers. They want to protect this, protect that, in the end, write their own media player. Need to use that particular media player just to play that DVD. Either that, you don't have the right codecs.

Only DVD players. Not the ones on computers. They don't have such problems.

I suspect Windows Media Player have problems reading many DVDs. I’ve encountered lots of incidents when WMP refuses to produce any audio when playing DVDs but it works perfectly when using VLC

Hi Mods,

I am experiencing the same problem. My existing laptop DVD-RW used to be able to support games CD-ROM, CDs, DVDs but lately the DVD-RW has not been able to detect any disc in the drive. The DVD-RW seems to be functioning as usual (LCD still lights up) but for some reason is not able to read any disc.

Is it possible that dirt may render the DVD-RW disfunctional or could there be other kinds of hardware or software problem that I can identify? Thanks all. Smile

Yup, dirt can sometimes make a DVD unreadable. Otherwise, scratches on the DVD also can be a cause. If after cleaning the DVD is still unreadable, it could be that the DVD is not properly burn. Test with other DVDs before reaching a conclusion that the DVD-RW drive is spoilt.

Thanks for the quick response. Its not that a DVD or CD-ROM is not properly burned cos I did not encounter this problem previously when using the same CD-ROM or DVDs. I'll most probably buy DVD-RW cleaners to clean the drive but somehow I got a nasty feeling that the problem may be deeper than just dirt.... Have you ever had a problem with dusty drives?

How about other DVDs? Does other DVDs give you the same problem? If yes, clean the DVD drive first. After cleaning, try again with some DVDs. If it failed again, the hardware is probably failing you.

yeah... all the other DVDs have the same problem. Just so annoying.... hopefully the lens cleaner can do the trick.

Maybe it's because of the region codes as some DVD roms are blind to certain codes.
