add new ram problem

after i add another 512mb ram.. i checked and it does reflect i haf 1gb ram on my computer now. but after awhile.. i ran a few programs ( such as firefox, msn, ms antispyware) and they had error msgs.. and auto restart my comp. after boot up again.. it will restart again (tis time no error msgs, if i dun run ani programs).

what is wrong? the ram is totally the same model and brand as the one i originally had...
now i took out the new ram and all's fine again...

maybe theres some problem with the ram… suggest that u give kingston a call and try to get a replacement one…

Red point: Sounds like your computer is infected with virus.

But you mention if you don't run any programs, it doesn't happen. Try removing the newly added RAM and run programs. If the error messages doesn't come up and your computer doesn't restart, it is the problem with the RAM. Return the RAM to Kingston and ask for replacement. If it happens again, scan your computer for viruses and get it quarantined or removed.

it sort of auto-restarts. I tot is virus too. took out new ram.. use old one onli.. no prob so shld not be virus.

Then is RAM problem. Bring back to Kingston and ask for replacement.

i read somewhere that if a new RAM is added and yr system cock up, it might be sth to do with the clcok frequency or processing of data or sth lyk dat but i nt very sure... Embarassed i'll try to check it fre u...anyway can u tell us wad the error msg says?

its jus a error msg lor... u noe ask u send error report..

seems like now also no more error msg le. when i run ms antispyware, midway thru the scan comp will auto restart. as usual, tkae out the new 512mb ram.. run the scan.. no problem...

I have 2 ways for you here...

Open up Device Manager (Right-click My Computer --> Properties --> under Hardware tab --> Device Manager). Does your new ram show any exclaimation mark? If it does, its having problems. Since its the same model as your original, shouldn't be driver problem. You may want to take it back for replacement

Its an Online Crash Analysis which helps you check for hardware failures. You need to have a blank disc as it'll do tests using the bootable disc. It may be able to figure out your problem.

Are u using a dual-channel Mobo?

If u aren't then ignore my posting.

I encounter a similar problem with my MB during a RAM upgrade. I brought the exact RAM model wif the exact size and slot it in into the remaining dual-channel slots. Problems such as urs surface. Inititally thought it was a RAM problem but reliase it was not. U can perform simple test:-

1.) I unplug my old RAM. Use the new ones = no problem.
2.) Unplug the new RAM, put back the old RAM = no problem.
(Note. I did the above on all the memory slots by swapping around to confirm there is nothing wrong wif my mobo or wif the RAM)

3.) Put all back in. Mix in different slots = problem. Even though dual-channel is activated but because the RAM comes from different batches so it is not compatiable even though the model is the same.

Bo pian, went back to the store to change my RAM to a bigger size.
Come back slot it in. No problems. However, my dual-channel is disabled. I scarifice my dual-channel for bigger size. Not a problem for me, infact my system perform better wif the bigger RAM (although I must admit, it might perform eveb better wif the dual-channel Neutral )

it doesn't say it is dual channel.. so it is not rite? wah heng ah. i just hope that is the new ram is faulty.. simple problem to be solved.

i think NOT ram problem, its your PSU not enough power to drive the 2 RAM cards.

There is a drop in power if you apply the same voltage across the 2 ram cards.
So when not enough power, after awhile, your computer auto-restarts. and will keep doing it.

The thing is you should have at least 350W PSU and above should be ok.

Else is your mother board got problem, try swapping the mem. slots one card at a time to check the slots.

If that is so, it shouldn't be causing problems. For your CPU, is it DIY or bought from a shop?

If it is DIY, do you still keep the receipt? Take out the receipt and see how many watts is written for the PSU.

If you bought from a shop, try calling up and ask them how many watts the PSU is able to provide.
