Transferring from Poly to JC

Hi all,

I'm a first year SP Banking and Finance student, and I'm planning to withdraw from poly after the semester ends and apply to a JC next year as I feel that it would open up more paths for me in the future. I'm not really interested in the whole 'Poly vs JC' debate as I've already made up my mind. Don't worry, it's not an on-the-spur decision and I'm prepared to mug day and night with few hours of sleep in JC (mugging isin't foreign to me, so it's alright). I'm looking at the Arts stream in YJC currently.

So my questions would be:

1. With my 'O' Level results, what subject combinations in JC do you think I can consider? (I didn't take A Math in secondary school, but I'm willing to work hard for my Math)

2. Anybody out there took this route before and what's your story?

3. What can I do these 6 months before JC starts to better prepare for it?

Maybe you can try H1 Math, H2 Geog, History or Literature or Biology.

If you intend to take a H2 Science (as part of the contrasting subject requirement of JCs), then as long as you can afford it and are willing to use it, you can consider joining tuition for that subject (eg. H2 Chem) now, ie. 6 months before JC starts. Such a headstart over your peers will prove invaluable. Solo 1-on-1 tuition will always be significantly more expensive than group tuition (often double or triple the fees).

You don't really need to worry about being a poly student. Some of my ex-poly-students can find their job like what they really want. It doesn't matter if you are staying in poly as long as you can find your passion from what you learn. Follow what you really think it is truly right. Still, if you really want to transfer, it will cost you some extra time to learn more and also you need more effort. You can take a look some JC modules first before start the JC. I am agree with UltimaOnline, you probably need an extra course to help you chase what you have left. Private tutor may help you to prepare well. Personally, I have never experienced something like this before, but I wish you can get what you really want. Good luck

I am assuming that by opting for JC, you will be pursuing studies in university in the future. I say this because a polytechnic diploma is more recognised than an A-level certificate, but JC is easier to get into university. In other words, the only incentive of JC is to get a university placing.

With that said, I highly recommend you think about what course you intend to take in university, and make sure that the JC subjects you choose meet the pre-requsities of that course. In terms of preparing for JC, reading the recommended textbooks/books will help.
