Confession: I shouted at a guy for being ungentlemanly, only to find out he was my big boss

Today's confession is from an SMU student who told a guy off for not helping her, then found out he was the regional head of operations at the company she was interning at.

Here is the confession in full:

"Wow I had a totally sh!tty day. I’m currently taking a break to do a 6 month internship at a global commercial bank. I’m currently assigned to learn from one of the directors - follow him around in meetings and experience what top management in a bank is like. There’s quite a few of us from SMU, NTU and NUS. We’re basically all assigned to different mentors, but located on the same floor.

"Today, I met this middle aged man at the pantry while I was trying to get myself a glass of water. We have this cool looking 2-in-1 water purifier and dispenser in our pantry which is manually replenished by the cleaner every few hours. I think the cleaner was late today so she hadn’t replenished the water yet.

"Since I saw that middle aged man at the pantry, I just told him to replenish it. It’s pretty brainless stuff, just takes a bit of physical strength. He took one look at me and just walked away. I think guys who act like this are just embarrassing. So I shouted “And you call yourself a man?” He ignored me and kept walking. As I headed back to my office, I was going to tell my mentor about this guy, but we had to go for a meeting because the regional head of operations was giving everyone a briefing.

"When we entered the conference room, I got the nastiest shock of my life. That ungentlemanly guy was actually the regional head of operations. And so the first thing I asked my mentor was “is his appointment higher than yours?” And he just replied me “You know the CEO for our bank in Singapore? This guy is one level higher – he’s the regional head for our banks located all over Asia.” Crap. I can’t use my mentor as a shield now.

"After the meeting that guy decided to be a total a**hole. He pointed me out as the girl who asked him to refill the water dispenser. The conference room went dead silent immediately. In front of everyone, he told my mentor to 'QC your employee. If you can’t make her change her attitude, make her change her job.' What really surprised me was how NOBODY DARED TO SAY ANYTHING! Even the female directors all kept quiet and just scowled at me after the meeting was over. What a joke. Hello that guy acted like a jerk to me at the pantry everyone. Highest rank so what?

"Then when we returned to the office, I was expecting the director to agree with me on how that guy is a douchebag or at least offer me some consolation. Guess what? He gave me another scolding when we got back. Wow thanks. I totally felt like crying after that."

SINGAPORE: With a name like Batman, one would have thought the 23-year-old man would aspire to do good.

But on Monday, the man -- who is actually named Batman Suparman -- was jailed two years and nine months for multiple theft and housebreaking offences.

Batman admitted to six counts of theft, two counts related to house trespass, one for housebreaking and one for drug consumption between June and August this year.

The prosecution proceeded on three of the 10 charges.

The court heard that Batman broke into SGF Billards & Marketing Singapore at Depot Road in the wee hours of the morning in August, and stole S$200.

On other occasions, Batman stole the ATM cards of his elder brother Nurazman Suparman, and made withdrawals totalling S$850.

During sentencing, the court heard that Batman is a first offender and a young one at that.

For housebreaking, he could have been jailed between two and 14 years.

The maximum punishment for theft is three years in jail and a fine.

[Medicine] - A vaccine researcher speaks out against vaccine

Dr. Diane Harper was the lead researcher in the development of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines, Gardasil™ and Cervarix™. She is now the latest in a long string of experts who are pressing the red alert button on the devastating consequences and irrelevancy of these vaccines. Dr. Harper made her surprising confession at the 4th International Converence on Vaccination which took place in Reston, Virginia. Her speech, which was originally intended to promote the benefits of the vaccines, took a 180-degree turn when she chose instead to clean her conscience about the deadly vaccines so she “could sleep at night”. The following is an excerpt from a story by Sarah Cain:

“Dr. Harper explained in her presentation that the cervical cancer risk in the U.S. is already extremely low, and that vaccinations are unlikely to have any effect upon the rate of cervical cancer in the United States. In fact, 70% of all HPV infections resolve themselves without treatment in a year, and the number rises to well over 90% in two years. Harper also mentioned the safety angle. All trials of the vaccines were done on children aged 15 and above, despite them currently being marketed for 9-year-olds. So far, 15,037 girls have reported adverse side effects from Gardasil™ alone to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), and this number only reflects parents who underwent the hurdles required for reporting adverse reactions. At the time of writing, 44 girls are officially known to have died from these vaccines. The reported side effects include Guillian Barré Syndrome (paralysis lasting for years, or permanently — sometimes eventually causing suffocation), lupus, seizures, blood clots, and brain inflammation. Parents are usually not made aware of these risks. Dr. Harper, the vaccine developer, claimed that she was speaking out, so that she might finally be able to sleep at night. ’About eight in every ten women who have been sexually active will have HPV at some stage of their life,’ Harper says. ’Normally there are no symptoms, and in 98 per cent of cases it clears itself. But in those cases where it doesn’t, and isn’t treated, it can lead to pre-cancerous cells which may develop into cervical cancer.’”

Although these two vaccines are marketed as protection against cervical cancer, this claim is purely hypothetical. Studies have proven “there is no demonstrated relationship between the condition being vaccinated for and the rare cancers that the vaccine might prevent, but it is marketed to do that nonetheless. In fact, there is no actual evidence that the vaccine can prevent any cancer. From the manufacturers own admissions, the vaccine only works on 4 strains out of 40 for a specific venereal disease that dies on its own in a relatively short period, so the chance of it actually helping an individual is about about the same as the chance of her being struck by a meteorite.”

Dramatic moment firefighters rescue Chinese girl, 5, after she got her head stuck between window bars on the OUTSIDE of an apartment block on the 24th floor

The little girl teetered on the edge of the railings, 70metres high, her head stuck between the bars

The little girl apparently climbed out of the living room window to take a 'look around'

A resident climbed out of an adjacent side window, broken open with bolt cutters, to support the little girl while she waited to be rescued

The rescue team eventually got access to the little girl from inside her apartment and got to work to free her from her position

Relief: She was pulled to safety by a team of emergency services crew

The little girl was heard crying by a neighbour who alerted the emergency services

A little girl whose head got trapped in window railings 70 metres high in a tower block has been rescued by firefighters

The five-year-old had climbed out of the living room window apparently because she wanted to take a 'look around'.

Footage shown by China's state broadcaster shows she had apparently managed to squeeze her body through the security bars on the outside of the window, but her head did not fit through.
In fact, her head being stuck may have prevented her from falling the 24 floors to the ground.

According to local media reports, the alarm was raised on Saturday by a neighbour who heard the little girl crying.

She had apparently been locked in on her own at her home, in Daye, Hubei province, central China.

Firefighters and police broke into the flat, while a local resident, suspended by a rope tied around his waist, climbed out of an adjacent window to help the child.

He put his arm around the child as she teetered on the edge of the railings, and wrapped a blanket behind her, to take some weight off her feet.

Her shoes were barely on anymore after standing for some time on the narrow rail, her head stuck and bent forward through the bars.

Emergency services eventually got access to the terrified little girl from a window close to where she was stuck. They used bolt cutters to free her before carefully pulling her back to safety.

OMG, Where do I even start?

So he started by asking what time I'd be done as he was going to catch a movie which would be ending at 7. I said I'd be done by 5, but you know, it's Orchard so it'd be quite easy for me to entertain myself till then. I also said that I had one condition - that he chooses where to eat. Because you know, I really am not that picky when it comes to food. Yes, I like to eat good food. But you know, it's not on my priority list. As I had previously illustrated here, in a post entitled "Sorry, but I still think food is a waste of money." And his reply was, "OK SET!" (or steady, somewhere along these lines).

So I went shopping in Forever 21... And at 7:15 pm...my nightmare began.

Wah he really loves his emoji icons hahahaa

Anyway, he was talking in a very badly accented act-atas voice. Which broke into ah-beng Chinese after 5 sentences.

"我不知道leh！我的朋友要排队lor。他女朋友啦！不知道她要不要吃。。。"

I told him to WhatsApp me after made up his mind.

So we reached the cafe and he spent a long time telling me about how he likes quiet spaces and how this cafe was quiet and never too crowded. We ordered food (It took very long. I think he was trying to appear cultured and deep by flaunting his knowledge on the fish burger.) and he then told me about his sales job at the alcohol company. Which he quit three months ago. But you know. What do I know about drinking right?

Matthew, "So what kind of alcohol do you like. WAIT, no let me guess...*squints and gives me the once over* you are a vodka girl."
Me, "No."
(Actually I quite like vodka but he was annoying me so I just disagreed reflexively.)
Matthew, "Strange. Most girls like vodka."
(Oh so that's how you guessed?! Brilliant.)
Me, "I am not most girls."
Matthew, "Oh really meh. Then what alcohol do you like?"
Me, "Whiskey."
Matthew, "Like Chivas?"
Me, "No. Laphroaig."
Matthew, "What?"
Me, "Laphroaig."
Matthew,"Oh. 好像有听过。It is not that good right?"
Me, "Actually I drink most alcohols except for Midori."
Matthew, "Midori?"
Me, "Melon Liquor. The green coloured one."
Matthew, "Ohhh. You don't like the taste of melon is it?"
Me, "No I am okay with melon. I just don't like the taste of Midori."
Matthew, "Do you eat watermelon?"
Me, "Yes. Midori is not watermelon."
Matthew, "Really meh? So you don't like melon?"
Me, "No I don't like midori, it's a different taste."
Matthew,"So you don't eat melon?"

Oh and you know how he talked to me? He liked to start each sentence like this...

"This may be too technical for you but...."
"I don't want to bore you with all the jargon...."
"I don't think you will understand but..."
"I would tell you but it may be too complicated for you..."

Then, we paid for the bill. Throughout dinner he was trying to impress me by talking my ear off, but when the bill came, the first thing he did was to flip it towards me. Hello, at least look at how much your share is first right? And then he went "I think you need $0.70 more. Nevermind, I treat you."

Yes. In conclusion, my advice to everyone, is never to go on a blind date. It's terrible and bad and unless you want to spend the evening trying not to die, or are trying to apply the skills you learnt in your anger management class, STAY AWAY.
